A balmy Friday night in Brazil would probably lead you to the nearest “boteco” –  a bar where good drinks and snacks are ready and waiting for your custom. On these shores, it’s not too hard find that sort of thing in Camden, but this London tribute – which is the sister to the nearby Made in Brasil  – does an excellent job in honouring the culture. If we didn’t know any better, we’d be convinced we were hanging out in Rio de Janeiro judging by the great music, lovely service, delicious “pestiscos” (tapas) and beautiful, masterly cocktails. There’s plenty to choose from and if deciding between 12 varieties of cairpirinhas at £4.50 a pop doesn’t put you in a happy mood, the food certainly will.

On a recent visit, we worked our way through a beautiful, generous selection of dishes,  fragrant with mouth-watering spices. Our favourites were the “camarao alho e oleo”, a delicious serving of garlic chilli prawns; the “frango a passarinho”, crunchy, moreish chicken pieces served with a lime mayo; and the vegetarian “Abobrinha recheada” a delicately-flavoured dish of courgette stuffed with artichoke and mushrooms.

MIBB_2

The desserts were just as impressive. A chocolate truffle (or “Brigadeiro”) was sticky and rich, packing a lot of flavour for such a modest serving.  At two quid each, we’d recommend going for a couple. And the passionfruit cheesecake (Cheesecake de maracuja) was tangy and lush, everything you’d expect of a worthwhile finale. So if you’re new to Brazilian food or wanted to get a taste of the culture, Made in Brasil Boteco should be on the hit-list. The great prices are a bonus!

Fusion restaurants have long been popular in the capital but this was my first time sampling Japanese and Peruvian cooking. Chotto Matte is a large restaurant by Soho standards and like its fusion food, the décor is a mixture of gold and black sleek sophistication suggesting an upmarket restaurant with a graffiti covered downstairs wall bringing coolness and colour to the place. It also has a mixture of small tables for cocktails and larger tables for dining with a large glass front which can be fully opened on warmer days. Chotto Matte Soho London Sake dragon Roll The fusion cooking gives the menu an array of choice with something to appeal to everyone from sushi to dumplings to barbecued meats. There is also a special quick lunch menu perfect for people looking for something filling and different in their lunch hour. On the main menu dishes are small and meant to be shared, with the highlight of our meal being the barbecued ribeye with Peruvian chilli. Beautifully cooked. this was tender melt-in-your-mouth steak with just the right amount of seasoning to it. And it’s worth saving room for dessert as I’ll be going back for the salted caramel chocolate fondant. Chotto Matte Soho London Moshi Moshi Padre The drinks menu is also Asian-inspired with an extensive cocktail and whisky collection, you get the impression if you want something that isn’t on the menu that probably means it’s not worth having and its time you tried something better. Unfortunately when I visited on a Thursday lunchtime the restaurant was quiet but I can imagine on a warm Friday night with people eager for an after-work drink or dinner, it will be a great and popular destination. 24-hour restaurants in London aren’t exactly new,  but it’s good news to us that one of the flashiest venues for a 3am T-bone steak – or whatever late night snack you fancy – has now extended its reach to Bloomsbury.  After 18 years of  feeding and watering Chelsea’s revellers, we expect the new VQ to be an even bigger hit for reasons we discovered this weekend.   It’s mere  minutes away from Tottenham Court Road station and while they can whip up a mean Cosmopolitan on the drinks front, we were pleasantly surprised that such a non-stop operation could also deliver with the eats.  There’s a 24-hour breakfast menu, but we personally loved the merguez sausages with harissa & tzatziki dip for starters, followed by the grilled salmon with spinach & hollandaise (with mashed potatoes) and the warm chocolate brownie to top it all off – so visit soon while they’re  currently offering 20% off the food and experience all this goodness and more for yourself…

Jumpin’. Jivin’. Juleps. Jazz. Sounds like the perfect ingredients for a Saturday night, which is why this new speakeasy caught our attention at TCé. The one-off at the Peckham Liberal Club brings together some of the fiercest jazz musicians in town for a rollicking’ evening of bourbon-fuelled dancing, inspired by the 1930s US southern scene. You’ll get to booty-bump along to the Kansas Smitty’s House Band, which has become quite the name, selling out shows at the Servants Jazz Quarter and popping up at secret warehouse parties. So you can expect they’ll get the party started right, along with the Kansas Smitty’s DJs, who’ll be filling in the gaps with quality swing and rhythm and blues.

speakeasy

As for the eats and drinks, The Tamale Shack will be dishing up the Mexican classic aplenty, while  Stav B will be hosting the bar, knocking out bourbons with the creative skill and precision this pop-up liquor bar has become known for. Just make sure you sign up for membership  at Kansas Smitty’s ASAP so this weekend you can let the good times roll.

After spending the past six years living in South Korea, English-born writer and musician Carys Jones  made the decision to pack her life into an 85 litre backpack and discover more of Asia. In this TCé, exclusive, she shares her travel tips for anyone looking to explore the sights and sounds of Hong Kong.

I stayed in Chungking Mansions on Nathan Street, Kowloon, home to hundreds of guest houses and ideal for travellers on a tight budget. On average, a single room will cost around $200 HK (approximately £18) a night. The accommodation is cell-like, just room for a tiny bed, a TV, and nothing else, though there is usually space under the bed to store your belongings. The rooms are generally clean, but you get what you pay for.

As for food, there’s no shortage of good Indian food in and around Chungking, but I was craving some greasy noodles and dumplings. The area surrounding Jordan Station is great for cheap local food, especially if you visit the night market. For awesome wonton and beef noodles, I highly recommend Mak Kan Kee. I also have to give a shoutout to Ned Kelly’s Last Stand Pub in Kowloon for inviting me to play drums with their phenomenal jazz band.

If you find yourself in Hong Kong, a trip to Lantau Island is a must. On my second outing there, I took the subway to Tung Chung Station then rode the cable car to the Po Lin monastery and the gigantic Tian Tan Buddha, more colloquially known as the ‘Big Buddha’. From there we took the number 21 bus to Tai O Fishing Village where I was told we could see pink dolphins if we were lucky, but unfortunately we didn’t spot any.
I’ve been told that one of the must-see attractions is The Peak. The best way to get there is by tram, but when I attempted to visit there was over an hour wait. I began to hike alongside the tram route, but as summer dresses and sandals don’t make for good hiking gear, especially in 34 degree weather and 69 per cent humidity, I eventually gave up and went to the nearby botanical gardens instead.

My next destination will be Shanghai. Word of advice, if you’re travelling to mainland China you will need a visa. These are easily obtainable from most travel agents in Hong Kong, but don’t make the rookie error I made and leave it until the last minute (I applied on a Friday, I needed the visa for the following Tuesday) as you could end up paying up to quadruple the base price.

With Dalston firmly established in its rep as the hipster region of the East End, it’s not surprising that a quirky new kid on the block like The Hunter S would set up shop in the area, hoping to match the popularity of Victoria Park Road’s Hemingway (the same guys are behind both) but overall, be a very good gastropub.  The stylish and curious decor declares Hunter’s bold intentions – glassy-eyed wildlife mounted on the walls is both fascinating and unnerving, and the restrooms oddly erotic  – but if there’s any doubt about this pub’s worth in the game, a visit will have you thinking otherwise.

The Hunter S Pub Pic: Matilda Egere-Cooper

Jazzy music warms up the atmosphere,  service is prompt and friendly and the menu offers a few delights that come highly recommended, like the scotch egg ( served with fresh piccalilli and the yolk is gorgeously soft).  Elsewhere, the salmon foursome of rillet, smoked, confit and caviar with melba toast is a generous pick, though only falls short by being a little salty.

The Hunter S Pub Pic: Matilda Egere-Cooper

Starters aside, the mains like the 3-5 day air hung rib-eye steak with hand cut chips  expectedly deliver – can’t go wrong, really? – and the 8 oz braised beef burger packs an extra punch with its Hunter sauce, bacon and cheese and caramelised onions. It’s colossal too.

The Hunter S Pub Pic: Matilda Egere-Cooper

It was very hard to resist dessert, especially as a good pecan pie can be hard to come by – and Hunter’s took me back to the kind my neighbours would bake when I was a kid in Texas – while the apple and mixed berry crumble with homemade custard is as perfect as it sounds.  To top things off, a three-course meal comes up to little under £30 which is decent for quality grub, and if you throw in a warming house red like the Esperanza Merlot, you’ll be sure to have a memorable evening at a pub that won’t be exclusive to the hip locals for long. Although it was purely a coincidence that I arranged to have lunch at Yauatcha on the day when all of nearby Chinatown was celebrating Chinese New Year, it felt rather fitting that I should be eating there on a day when all thoughts were on new beginnings.

I’d been to Soho’s swankiest dim sum restaurant before, on a couple of occasions, but due to no fault of theirs always left with a sense of melancholy; I won’t labour the point but let’s just say unrequited romance was involved and I’d come to feel that Yauatcha and I were jinxed. This time I was with my purely-platonic pal Eliot, so there was no danger of me leaving with a heavy heart, and could appraise the experience rather less partially than on my previous visits.

Opened by uber-restaurateur Alan Yau – he of Wagamama and Busaba fame, as well as Hakkasan and Sake No Hana – in 2004, Yauatcha is a sleek, sprawling two-floor space designed by French king of cool Christian Liaigre. The ground floor tea room (although to call it such is rather like calling Harrods a corner shop) is a light, bright room done out in minimalist grey and black with accents of blue including the glass front wall; downstairs is a dark, sexy jewel-coloured dining room with acres of lacquer and a twinkling ceiling. We were seated in the former; the unsuitability of the low-slung seating for two chaps both 6’3″ and over is all I can find to fault about the design…

Overlooking the chaos of the city is a lovely little rooftop with a difference. You can now escape from the winter weather and warm up at WigWamBam, a cosy, heated wigwam on top of the Queen of Hoxton. Of course no domed dwelling would be complete without a bar and grill, so you can enjoy a hot mulled cider and chargrilled snack while snuggling up under the twinkle of fairy lights. The wigwam is in residence for three months, with themed nights and eccentric events taking place throughout. So head down and enjoy live readings, ukelele jam sessions, acoustic music and sing-a-longs under the stars.

WigWamBam is at the Queen of Hoxton, 1-5 Curtain Road, and is open Monday to Friday 4-10pm and Saturday 6-10pm until March 2012. More information can be found here: www.queenofhoxton.com (Words: Clare Ebberson)
