Man… July was a bit of a cruel one to me. My site got hacked plus I’ve had loads of housing drama (typical London). Like, ‘start a building petition and write to your MP’ drama. But it’s August, it’s “summer”,  and I can finally see the calm after the storm. Thus, it’s time to get my social life back. As it so happens, it’s my birthday month (woop!) and personally, I’m all for celebrating as much as possible until the actual day (the 15th), so with no further adieu, here’s the first of two summer parties in London I can’t wait to check out this weekend:

summer parties in London

No Long Ting All Dayer Part 2, Pop Brixton, August 7th (2-11pm)

I’ve wanted to hit up No Long Ting for the absolute LONGEST. It’s sort of like a block party / house party hosted by one of the capital’s finest hip-hop artists Ty and the good folks from the United 80 shop in the Market Village. I heard good things about the June event, so I’m expecting all of the best vibes.

summer parties in London

Room4Movement, The Book Club, August 7th (7-midnight)

Fresh from killing another Jazz Re:fest at the Southbank last month, the Jazz Re:freshed crew is throwing the latest of their East London music jams this weekend. DJ Charlie Dark will be bringing the tunes, along with residents  Bunny Bread, Top Rock & Adam Rock. These guys always come strong, so no doubt it’s gonna be a lively one!

Are there any summer parties in London you’re looking forward to? Let me know in the comments!

True stories: I knew very little about Lovebox festival before I got tickets. But a friend reckoned that if I’d ever experienced Wireless, this annual gig in Victoria Park wasn’t too far off. Well, he wasn’t wrong. Between the young demographic and the limited info available to direct you to the right stages, I gotta say, it wasn’t really my vibe. But what I did appreciate was seeing my Run Dem buddy Peigh reunite with his group NuBrandFlexxx for a brilliant show on the Visions stage.

The return of NuBrandFlexxx

Amped, energetic and brilliantly reckless, the grime gang flew through their known hits. I wished I recorded the ecstatic crowd reaction to their anthem and 2000 Nu Brand – folk were really all up in their emotions. Also, I got to see a bit of Kano in a tent (which made no sense whatsoever – give the man main stage already!).  If I’m gonna be real with y’all, I felt so uncomfortable in the midst of the mosh,  I needed to back out and find a space where I could breathe. I’m way too old for all that pushing and shoving. But naturally, I stayed long enough to get a few snaps, so here’s my pictures from the Friday of Lovebox Festival 2016:

The next fest I’ll be heading to is Jazz Re:fest on the 31st, which is totally up my street. I wentchecked it out tlast year so I know this year’s event will be just as brilliant. Can’t wait.

My weekend was so jam-packed with outings and Christmas festivities (not to mention my new Star Wars obsession – more about that another time), I’ve only just had time to blog about it.  But what a weekend it was. I squeezed in a quick sweep around the V&A, lunch at Tombo, panettone from Santa, a ride by the BEST decorated house EVER, a carol service at Wembley and my friend’s annual gingerbread party. And the best bit? Sleeping it all off on Monday.

All shot on a Canon 5D Mark 1 with a 24-105mm lens.

The Vault Festival celebrates all that’s  weird, wonderful and experimental in London’s creative underground with an incredible offering of music and entertainment that has seen it go strong for the last three years.  Last week, TCé passed through  to check out The Dog and The Elephant – a brooding one-man show which tells the story of a man’s friendship with an African Elephant.  It’s a strange premise, but surprisingly, one that makes for a very compelling show.   Later, we hung around for the free live music, watching folksters The Ceilidh Liberation Front effortlessly bring over 100 people to their feet to  dance the cares of the hump day away.  If you want to get in on this action – and believe me, you will – the festival runs until 8th March and more information can be found at www.vaultfestival.com.  Check out pics from our recent visit below!

Who doesn’t love flicking through a quality broadsheet on a Sunday? It’s this sentiment that inspired the guys behind the Wilderness Festival to come up with Sunday Papers Live – a clever day of intelligent cultural pursuits, structured around the sections you’d usually find in a weekend paper. Taking place in a giant living room, this immersive event covers a number of journalistic topics in the form of conversations, performances, workshops and walks, led by some of the finest speakers and personalities in the capital. Sunday_papers This edition’s line-up includes Channel 4’s Jon Snow (World News), comedian Andrew Maxwell (Columnist), Natty Cangeroo & The Flames of Rhythm (Music) and the 37-strong Wilderness Orchestra, who’ll be taking care of the film section by performing some of the greatest movie soundtracks. Plus, there are over 15 more guests on the bill taking on various themes across culture and lifestyle, while the food comes from cult faves The Breakfast Club and eco-chef Tom Hunt, who’ll be whipping up a banquet roast. Sounds like the kind of Sunday we could get used to… Sunday Papers Live takes place on November 24th at Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Road. Though October has just begun, we’re already looking forward to the 22nd,  when the Barbican launches a massive new show revealing the playful collision between the pop art tradition and world of design.  Pop Art Design is a comprehensive collection of artworks which make those bold statements the legendary genre was best known for when it emerged 50 years ago – so  there’s the provocative commentary on the cult of celebrity and consumerism, but it all goes beyond graphics and paintings to feature some of the designs, objects,  architecture and interiors inspired by the movement.

There’s over 200 works from 70 iconic and lesser known artists and designers including Andy WarholRoy Lichtenstein and Achille Castiglioni, and alongside the exhibition will be events, talks, tours, workshops and film screenings, all running up until February 2014.  For more info, visit: www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/event-detail.asp?ID=14797

October, October, October – the month where we’re not only reminded of how close we are to the end of the year, but which also offers the last of the worthy happenings around town before everything starts to take a certain red and green tinge (with a whiff mixed spice). So here’s your chance to join forces with fellow bike enthusiasts, catch a flick at the LFF or salute Nelson Mandela, amongst other top things we’ve picked out. Enjoy!

Alternative

London Bicycle Film Festival at Barbican, October 3-6th – It’s officially a decade since the Bicycle Film Festival was created to celebrate urban cycling around the world, so this year’s events are quite the milestone. The London leg kicks off with a party at Hackney Downs Studio followed by a symposium and a selection of insightful short film screenings at the Barbican – all worth checking out, especially if you’re a lover of bike culture.

Arts & Culture

Mandela and De Klerk 2011 by Richard Chauke We Love Mandela: Art Inspired by Madiba exhibition, October 3rd – 16th – The touring exhibition of paintings, photographs, sculptures and artefacts were created to celebrate the milestone birthdays of the South African leader and comes to London following a stint at Johannesburg’s Peacemakers museum. It makes a brief visit, so catch it if you can.

Arts & Culture

BFI London Film Festival, October 9-20th – After a run-of-the-mill summer movie season, autumn really needs to start with a bang. Thankfully, the 57th BFI London Film Festival is more than up to the task. The LFF has assembled its strongest line-up in years and there is something for every film lover in this twelve days celebration of the magic of cinema.

Music

Bilal at Islington Assembly Hall, October 24th – This Philly soul singer has collaborated with some of the best in the biz (Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, Robert Glasper), but has always put on a heck of a show when rolling solo. We’re looking forward to seeing him in action when he hits North London at the end of the month.

Eat & Drink

PipsDish, 15 Exeter Street Covent Garden – The Islington pop-up makes a permanent home on Exeter Street in Covent Garden this month, promising to bring something new to the table. They’ll be serving brekkie for starters, and will continue their “no-menu” tradition of offering a variety of seasonal dishes made with quality, locally-sourced ingredients.

Best bits from last month
