Hip Hop may have come a long way through the years and for all those who weren’t around to witness its humble beginnings, here’s an opportunity to catch up. Wild Style – widely considered the most influential and essential film on 1980s hip hop culture – is 30 years old and Oval Space cinema are reviving a bit of its attitude and authority tonight. Made in 1983 and directed by Charlie Ahearn,

Wild Style was a seminal piece of cinema and the first to record South Bronx living. It featured the relatively unknown disciplines of b-boying, graffiti artists, MC-ing and turntablism – so synonymous with Hip Hop now. wildstyle1 Many of the cast were straight from the scene, representing the culture they were developing (from within around five boroughs in New York) including Flash Five Freddy, Grandmaster Flash and The Rock Steady Crew. The film has famously been sampled on albums by everyone from Nas, the Beastie Boys and Jurassic 5. Naturally the soundtrack is one of the essential Hip Hop albums to date and some of its music disciplines play testament at this event. The night features a screening of the film followed by a late night event with guest DJs including Ghostpoet, Tim Westwood, Alexander Nut and Patchwork Pirates: all masters of their art and truly influenced by this old skool style. The low fi effects of Wild Style may be a far cry from the big budget bling we see today but there can’t be much more authentic than the atmosphere of this film. And the night promises to revive some of those vibes too. (Words: Laura Thornley) For more info visit: www.ovalspace.co.uk

Before you chew us out for yet ANOTHER cinema recommendation this week, we’ve come to realise there’s just some things in life that can’t be ignored – like a cinema project that bridges the gap between artistic disciplines (and just so happens to float).

Off the back of a pilot  in 2011, UP Projects’ The Floating Cinema is pretty unusual, but it arrives for 10 weeks of programmes as innovative and creative as its cargo-style construction.

floating_cinema

“Extra-Ordinary” will feature live art shows, tours along the waterways, a horror weekender – where films will be projected from the boat to the bank side – and a fancy dress screening of Frankenweenie near 3 Mills Studio where it was made. There’s also a number of on-board workshops and talks planned , unveiling some of the more interesting stories about the Lea Valley area where the boat will be regularly docked.

The events are the brainchild of artist duo Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie who say the compact space (which seats 12) will be a place for creative things to happen – and given our love for all things hip and arty, that’s just too good to resist.

It seems no matter where you turn, there’s an outdoor cinema – but dishing out a hefty amount of cash to watch a cult classic outside is the last thing we’re trying to do in these thrifty times – so we’re kinda liking the idea of Pop-Up Screens. For just £8 per person, you can set up camp in one of a number of parks and bring along cushions, blankets, foldable chairs (we practically brought our entire sofa set), and your own food. So that’s where we could be found last Saturday, as we enjoyed Adam Sandler’s The Wedding Singer on a pop-up screen – literally. Pop Up Screens It was fun watching the team blow up the gigantic inflatable while we got ourselves nice and comfy on our cushions, before tucking into our chinese takeway. Plus there was a charming host on the evening who was gracious enough to introduce the film and wrap up the proceedings afterwards. But a word of advice – arrive as early as possible so you can stake your claim on a decent spot to watch the film, and you might want to bring something a little bit warmer than a blanket as it can get chilly by the time the film finishes. But if the weather continues to go in this tropical direction, we doubt you’ll have to worry about that! For more info about Pop Up Screens, visit: www.popupscreens.co.uk

Remember when going to the cinema was simple and fun? After getting your tickets, you’d buy a huge bucket of fresh popcorn to go with your delicious hot dog and perfectly cold soda. After managing to carry all of your tasty food selections, you’d settle into a nice, oversized clean seat with a great view of the screen, ready to spend the next few hours immersed in another world. Doesn’t quite sound like the last time you went to the cinema? Maybe your popcorn was a few days old or your narrow seat had chewing gum on the arm rest? Well, you’re not alone. A few years ago, a few north Londoners found themselves fantasising about a genuinely relaxing and fun cinema experience and decided to create one for themselves. Backyard Cinema was born: fun and spacious outdoor settings featuring

a big screen surrounded by comfy deck chairs and bean bags. Instead of stale food stand offerings, the team behind Backyard Cinema provides food straight from the BBQ along with freshly made popcorn. Rather than a cup of ice and a bit of soda, their bar is stocked with wine, beer and cocktails. byc   Their next event is a mini-movie festival taking place July 20-21 under the arches of the London Fields Brewery in Hackeny. Films include The Big Lebowski, The Hobbit, and Life of Pi. Films continue through the summer at Camden Market, where Backyard Cinema has set up a screening area next to the Regents Canal and a stone’s throw from the famous street stalls serving up worldwide cuisines. Almost Famous, Evil Dead 2, and Stand By Me are some of the titles they’ll be showing until the end of August. (Words: Barbara Cole) For more information visit www.backyardcinema.co.uk

Imagine Heston Blumenthal  invaded the snack bar of your local cinema, transforming the experience of movie-watching into something so unforgettable, you can’t help but wonder why no one thought of it sooner.  It was only a year ago that Edible Cinema decided night outs should be a little more creative – and where Secret Cinema, Future Cinema and the various spin-offs have gone the theatrical route, the guys behind ED have targeted your snacks instead.

edible_cinema

The aim of the game  is to use your tastebuds to pull you into the narrative of a film – but you don’t have a clue what you’re eating or drinking as you’re given a tray of numbered parcels which you’re required to open during certain scenes of the film.  We recently checked out Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and as a number flashes up at the side of the screen, you can hear the audience scrambling around to eat/drink the mysterious delicacies – some more tasty than others (and some just down right strange).   At times, the parcels didn’t work at all –  one particular link to a pigeon scene in the film was a little too gross for our liking – and there seemed to be alot more sweet treats than savoury,  although the mint/frozen ice reference was one of our favourites.   Still, Edible Cinema is alot of fun, and if you’re after something a bit more adventurous than 3D glasses and mixed-flavour popcorn, this is a great  bet.  (Words: Matilda Egere-Cooper)

The 70’s are back in town this month with a screening of Saturday Night Fever like no other. For just few weeks in June & July the immersive cinema experience that is Future Cinema are transforming the Troxy into the Club 2001 Odyssey, fully decked out with DJs, dancefloors and disco balls.

True to Future Cinema’s reputation for creating once-in-a-lifetime cinema experiences, this event will be much more than the showing of an iconic film – it’s an immersion into a whole world. Expect vibrant technicolor and glamour that fuses film, music, performance and design to create an unforgettable foray into the age of disco, while honouring the legendary dance film, starring John Travolta.

Saturday Night Fever

There will be dance classes, hairstyling, beauty parlours, vinyl, American hotdogs… all the best that the 70’s had to offer. On select nights there will even be special music guests such as disco diva Kym Mazelle to complete the Saturday Night atmosphere.

To make the most of a show like this you’ll need to get into character yourself. Glam up in vintage 70’s style and however you wear your hair, wear it bigger – then you know you’re ready to party. (Words: Nori Bell-Bhuiyan)

On until July 7th 2013. For more information visit: www.futurecinema.co.uk/news

February is traditionally a very busy month for cinema goers. With the awards season reaching its climax on both sides of the Atlantic, the nominated films usually dominate the list of choices for a night out at the movies. So during such a period the upcoming pop–up screening of the classic 80s sci-fi adventure Back to the Future may seem like the last of your priorities – but there are a couple of reasons why we believe it deserves your attention.

To begin with, Back to the Future could  make a great double-bill with Oscar-nominated Flight, since both are directed by the award-winning director Robert Zemeckis. Furthermore, Flight marks the return of the visionary director to live-action films after eight years of experimentation with 3D motion capture techniques in films such as The Polar Express and Beowulf. So what a better way to celebrate this occasion than by watching his first truly great film?

back-to-the-future-lloyd-michael-j-fox

Secondly, this pop-up screening will take place at the restaurant Paradise at Kensal Green where you can watch the film while enjoying some delicious food. Isn’t this a more appealing option than say eating a popcorn box while watching the realistic scenes of torture in Zero Dark Thirty?

But seriously, the fact that  the term ‘classic’ is justifiably applied to Back to the Future should be enough of a reason to go re-watch the film. Taking the premise of time-travelling to thrilling, entertaining as well as intriguing places and offering us two characters that have secured their place in the pop pantheon (Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd’s Dr Emmett Brown) it is one of those films that you will always get back to and lingers in your memory much longer than each year’s Oscar favourite. (Words: Apostolos Kostoulas)

The pop-up screening of Back to the Future will take place on Sunday 17 February at 2:30 pm as part of the Paradise by way of the Silver Screen series co- produced by Paradise and Lexi Cinema. For more information go to: www.thelexicinema.co.uk

Christmas has been and gone, and whilst for some it’s the food and the gifts that will be sorely missed, for me, it’s the movies. Whether they’re good or bad, Christmas-themed tearjerkers or action-packed frightfests, to me Christmas is all about the movie magic. If you’re suffering withdrawal symptoms (like having to resort to Eastenders omnibus), don’t worry, because help is at hand – today sees the start of the London Short Film Festival.

London Short Film Festival

Now in its 10th year, the LSFF is showcasing some of the best independent film-making talent in the UK. Featuring films that have made it through an open call for submissions, the event kicks off at the ICA with New Shorts #1: Funny Shit. Russell Tovey (of Him and Her) stars in Is This A Joke? and there’ll be a screening of Will Self novel adaptation The North London Book of the Dead.

London Short Film Festival

Throughout the week films are split into themes, so Leftfield and Luscious is dedicated to the more experimental film genre (Metamorphosis featuring Anna Friel is one worth seeking out) whilst Romance at the Rio held at Rio cinema in Dalston will be one for rom-dram fans. Femmes Fantastiques will be showing films from female directors including Romola Garai (of BBC drama The Hour) and if you get tired of film-watching, there are retrospectives, networking events and talks to keep you going. Celebrate the best of British talent (and fill that Christmas movie-shaped hole) here.

The London Short Film Festival runs 4 Jan – 13 Jan at various venues. For more info visit  http://www.shortfilms.org.uk
