August is the time when most people have zipped off on their annual hols, leaving the rest of us Londoners to relish in the last hoorahs to summer – so here’s to a month of good eating, dancing, cycling (!) and whatever else floats your boat…

Alternative

RideLondon 100, August 3-4 – Thousands of amateur cyclists will be taking over the capital in this brand new festival that Boris Johnson is calling the “London Marathon on wheels”. Wow. Starting at the Olympic Park, riders will go through the capital and onto the countryside in Surrey before finishing up in Central London.

Arts & Culture

Nneka Africa Centre Summer Festival, August 3-4 – Come along to these free all-dayers in Covent Garden to enjoy some of the finest African fashion, arts and music, including singer-songwriter Nneka (pictured above).

Arts & Culture

ZooNation’s Groove On Down the Road at Southbank Centre, August 10 – September 1 – The latest from the Festival of Neighbourhood sees one of London’s favourite hip-hop dance companies re-work The Wiz – so expect a great show with good tunes to match!

Eat & Drink

FEAST x Foodies Festival , August 16-18th – Are we shouting about FEAST again? Yep – ’cause good eatin’ should never be ignored, so head south this month as the fest sets up camp in Battersea Park to collaborate with the Foodies Festival. There will also be live music, a chef’s area and a foodie’s farm to make it one heck of a food-filled weekend.

Arts & Culture

Notting Hill Carnival, August 25-26 -Iit’s an earlier bank holiday this month, which means we’ll be busting moves, sipping rum, marveling at colourful costumes and wolfing down jerk chicken at this annual lively affair before you know it.

Cinema

Portobello Film Festival, August 28 – September 15 – Watch a collection of exciting shorts, doc and animations from some of the most daring – and independent – filmmakers around who’ve made the PFF what it is since 1996. Along with plenty of talks and workshops, flicks will be shown in venues such as Westbourne Studios and the Portobello Pop Up Cinema under the Westway.

Oh August – how did you get here so soon? Here’s to the last of the holiday months in the capital, which promises some very cool new nights  and that massive event that goes down in West London over the bank holiday weekend that always has the best jerk chicken…

Nightlife

The Love Below at Trailer Happiness, August 5th – There’s a new monthly Sunday lounge coming to Notting Hill for those cool Londoners who like their music hip, chilled and classic. It’s called The Love Below (and if you remember anything about its namesake album by Andre 3000, you’ll know you want to be here).

Nightlife

No Long Ting at The Brick Box, 354 Coldharbour Lane, August 10th – Illustrious London MC Ty curates a night of music, artwork, films, DJs, food (and cheap drinks) in Brixton – and whether this is the one-off or the start of something regular, it sounds BRILLIANT.

Activity

Street Photography Workshop, August 12th – Our sister site The Culture Club Photography Workshops wants to take you on a journey around Shoreditch where your photography skills will go up a few notches making you the envy of all your mates. One to book.

 Arts & Culture

Bush Bazaar, Bush Theatre, until August 18th – Described as a “90 minute fantastical adventure” this pop-up theatre event brings together some of the capital’s most daring performers to perform a collection of shows that sound pretty intriguing…

Alternative

Midnight Run, August 18th – Poet Inua Ellams leads a creative, after-hours expedition around London to experience the capital in a unique way.  There’s food, games and “experiments” – and no running required – so  just try to hold out until 6am!

Cinema

Guilty Pleasures Cinema Party, August 24th and 25th –  This one’s for all the Madonna lovers out there, as the Troxy Cinema hosts a par-tay to top all partays, featuring a screening of Desperately Seeking Susan.  It’ll be a crazy, colourful  throwback to the 80s with DJs, dancers and bands (and we LOVE that).

Eat & Drink

Flat Iron pop-up steak and cocktail restaurant – this new foodie spot actually launched a few weeks back, but runs for six weeks only until August 28th (so thought it’d be worth a visit this month).  These guys are serving up some serious slabs of meat, so those with carnivorous tendencies should head to The Owl and Pussycat pub, pronto (Tuesday – Saturday, 6pm-10pm)

Special Event

Notting Hill Carnival, August 26th and 27th – there’s dozens of floats, good food and tunes, happy people (although a little overpacked – but meh); it’s Europe’s largest street festival and a brilliant way to spend the bank holiday weekend. See you there?

Is it just me, or does it seem like the rest of Europe tends to pull off the most eclectic and all-round amazing festivals in the summer? I passed through Switzerland’s Montreux in ’09 (Best. Fest. Ever) and rather excitingly, TCé will be heading to Finland next month to get a load of Flow – a creative music and arts festival based in Helsinki.  With a passion for experimentalism and quality music, they’ve got an impressive lineup in 2011, with Kanye West as the main headliner, and other awesome acts on board include Janelle Monae (OMG!), Lykki Li, Mogwai, Empire of the Sun, A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip and our Capital’s very own electro-popster James Blake.

Flow also has a strong tradition of championing underground heroes from their native country and beyond,  so if Ignatz, Kawaguchi Masami’s New Rock Syndicate, Kemialliset YstŠvŠt or Mikko Innanen & Innkvisitio, mean anything to you musos out there, we’ll be scoping them out, along with a unique art installation from Berlin-based Croatian artist Ivana Franke (check out her stuff here) at the new Cirko venue of the festival site.

Rest assured we’ll  keep you posted on all this and more on August 12 to 14, but for more information visit www.flowfestival.com. If you fancy coming along, 3-day  tickets are 115 € (£101) and flights can be taken with Blue 1, starting from £237 for a 4-day return trip from Heathrow to Helsinki.  For accommodation info ,visit the Scandic Hotels site.  (Words: Matilda Egere-Cooper)
