It’s a modern Italian restaurant housed within the trendy ME London Hotel and screams class and sophistication the moment you walk in – so if you’re looking for a place that impresses, Cucina Asellina is a good contender. In an attempt to distinguish itself from other outlets that serve up similar culinary fare, Cucina prides itself on attentive service, creative food and cocktails, which, on the afternoon we visited, were all pretty flawless. A beef fillet carpaccio along with the veal meatballs were both good-looking and tasty starters, followed by the cod brandade tortelloni which we were told is a labour of love (all pastas are homemade here). It could have packed more of a punch where flavours were concerned – which was why I was slightly envious of my friend’s new season lamb with an extra grilled cutlet, served with gnocci and broad beans; such a winning combo.
Desserts didn’t disappoint and if you’re after recommendations, the warm hazelnut & walnut tart with vanilla ice cream or amaretto semi freddo with spiced caramel and poached pears are both sweet numbers. Price-wise, you might leave with a hefty bill given the Aldwych location (a 3-course meal for two with wine hits the £100 mark), but we hear they’ve got a fairly affordable lunch menu where you can get a dish for a tenner – nice!
