A round of applause for 2015: you did good. I could reel off all of the things I loved about it, but we might be here for a while  – so here’s my top five favourite moments of the year, in no particular order:

That camping trip

Landed! My VIP suite for the night! #icantbelieveimactuallycamping

A photo posted by Matilda (@megerecooper) on

At the grand age of 34, I’d never been camping – but an assignment for Reuters gave me the chance to glamp it up in June at the very first Camp Wildfire – an adventure camp for adults. And you know what? It wasn’t half-bad! I did wish there were showers, but hey…

Running an ultra marathon

Nothing but hills and valleys! #rttsishere #wmnrun100 #rundemcrew   A photo posted by Matilda (@megerecooper) on

I kickstarted my love for running when I just Run Dem Crew nearly five years ago.  Since then, I’ve knocked out 5ks, 10ks, half-marathons, a marathon and this year, my first ultra marathon (50k) in July as part of the wmnrun100 project.

That weekend in Paris

Beaaaaaaaaautiful weather for cheering (and pain au chocolats!) #rundemcrew #semiparis #btgparis

A photo posted by Matilda (@megerecooper) on

Speaking of Run Dem, one of our mottos is “if you do not run, you must cheer” – so I hopped on the Eurostar at the 11th hour in June to show some love to everyone doing the Paris half-marathon, and had a whale of a time with my buddies Camila and My-Ha.

The return of Tawiah

I mean… 😳 @tawiahmusic #whenyoutrumptheoriginal #sorrySoul4Real #candyrain #soulmusic #UK A video posted by Matilda (@megerecooper) on

Those that know, know. Tawiah is, hands down, one of my favourite female vocalists of all time, so seeing her at a one-off gig this year with my friend Spree was a real pleasure.

The fried chicken at the Lockhart

Woyyyyyy yoooooooyyyyyyy *horns* chicken and waffles! 😍😍😍

A photo posted by Matilda (@megerecooper) on

I’m a southern girl (Houston, Texas baby!) and I didn’t think I’d ever find real buttermilk fried chicken in Londontown until I had dinner at The Lockhart, which I only discovered this year.  Compliments to the chef: the food is fantastic.

In the run-up to 2013, The Cultural Exposé team share their favourite highlights of 2012 and something they’re looking forward to in the New Year:

Highlight of 2012: The Horrors at Brixton Academy, May 25th 2012

The Horrors
“This was quite simply one of the best gigs I’ve been to in years. Supported by Toy and the psychedelic wanderings of Beak, The Horrors powered through the kraut-inspired magnificence of second album ‘Primary Colours’ and their latest effort ‘Skying’ with tightness and vibrancy and the most infectious epic groove. In the process they confirmed themselves as not only one of the most interesting bands on record but probably the best British band in the live arena to boot. (I was lucky enough to catch them at Latitude too. They did not disappoint).”

Something I’m looking forward to in 2013: The Loco Film Festival, January 24th-27th

Tootsie

“A four day festival of the best comedy films from all over the world. Now that you’ve given up booze for a month, this is the perfect New Year pick-me-up”

In the run-up to 2013, The Cultural Exposé team share their favourite highlights of 2012 and something they’re looking forward to in the New Year:

Highlight of 2012: The Goonies at Nomad Cinema, 18 August 2012

Goonies

“It is difficult not to get a little bit nostalgic at the end of the year, when you start reminiscing about all the exciting events you attended over the last twelve months. My fond memories of the special screening of The Goonies may well be related to the fact that when I am writing these lines the outside temperature is a little bit above 0 °C and watching a favourite film at the beautiful Queen’s Park under the warm summer sky seems extremely appealing. The Goonies though, do not need an ideal setting to capture your heart and transfer you back to your restless childhood. In a year that many Hollywood blockbusters tackled adult themes and became all dark and serious on us, The Goonies was the most fun cinematic experience I had all year.” http://www.theculturalexpose.co.uk/film/something-you-should-go-the-goonies-at-nomad-cinema/

Something I am looking forward to in 2013: Screwball season at the BFI (Throughout January)

His Girl Friday

“Welcoming the new year with an unbeatable combination of sophistication, romance and comedy courtesy of Hollywood’s golden era”

Highlight of 2012: William Klein & Daido Moriyama at Tate Modern, October 2012

William Klein

“I enjoyed the exhibition for the wealth of work on display and the pleasant surprises. Moriyama’s harsh, sober portraits of Tokyo provided a perfect contrast to Klein’s energetic vision of New York. As someone who’s interested in the use of text in art, Klein’s wooden panel paintings of abstract letters were a bonus. I knew he’d started out as a painter but my knowledge of Klein was through his work as a photographer and filmmaker. I like him even more now.”

Something I’m looking forward to in 2013: Juergen Teller’s Woo at the ICA, January 23rd- March 17th 2013

Juergen Teller

“A bit of fashion escapism to banish the winter blues from the influential artist and photographer.”

We didn’t have to think too long and hard about this one.  For all this year’s hip and cultural happenings, this PA from A Tribe Called Quest’s legendary member Q-Tip (in my ‘hood of all places) has to go down as one of the most exciting  – and random –  gigs of 2011. Much love to Amelia from Put Me On It who spread the word on Facebook a day before the show, along with YoYo hosts Seb Chew and Leo Greenslade for pulling this trick out the bag.  You can re-live the brilliant night in photos, just here….

So with all our highlights now done and dusted, we’d like to say a very happy New Year to you and yours for this weekend – see ya in 2012!
