TCé’s Tina Remiz is a London-based multimedia reporter and visual artist from Latvia. Brought up in Riga, she spent two years studying in Bristol before relocating to London, where she’s been developing her documentary-style of photography. She’s a keen traveller, and while abroad, she loves meeting people to be inspired by their traditions, culture and lifestyle.

Destination: Lhasa, Tibet

“I visited Lhasa as a part of a month-long journey across the South-East of China last winter. From Kowloon Island – the world’s most densely-populated area situated in the heart of Hong Kong – I took a 59-hour (!) train ride to the Roof of the World. It’s hidden in the vastness of the Himalayas, and quite mysterious. I’ve always been a avid support of Tibet (I joined “Free Tibet!” marches at the age of 14 lol) so I finally decided to see the place for myself.”

Designer by day, photographer by night and traveller by nature, Aimo Javier’s photography reflects the way he sees the things, people and places that he visits. He tries to steer away from the stereotypical travel photography as much as possible and is currently residing in Malaysia until it gets warmer in Europe.

The Destination: Ibiza

“Initially I wasn’t too keen to see the island, but I decided to visit Ibiza after the party season had ended to visit some friends who are convinced that it’s the best place to live!”

Born and raised in London, Clare has been taking photos since she was a kid – unsurprisingly then, that her passion led her to attend a photography school in Montreal, Canada, where she lived for 10 years. Since then, she’s been pursuing a professional career in photography, and admits she’s varied in her approach: “People often ask me what kind of photographer I am,” she says on her website. “And I never give them a straight forward answer. I’d rather not be defined that way. I’m not a portrait photographer, or a documentary photographer, I am simply someone who looks at things differently, and is lucky enough to have a camera to capture thoughts, feelings and whatever is in front of me.” She’s now working on her first book, a collection of photos and words from her travels in Asia.

The Destination: South Korea

“I’m in South Korea teaching English as I love to travel, I love to teach and I adore capturing moments with my camera. I was given the opportunity to come and teach here for a year so here I am. It’s only natural that I document things along the way.”

Birmingham might be the birthplace and current home of photographer Rob Grimes, but his job takes him all over the country, as he’s currently a soldier with the Armed Forces. It’s given him access to countries most people may never get a chance to visit (Iraq and Afghanistan), while allowing him to document his life spent in places such as Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Kenya and the US. He’s since set up his own photography business on the side, shooting weddings, portraits and travel and expedition photography – as as a fully qualified expedition leader, he’s snapped his adventures along the Inca Trail, the Alps and the Himalayas.

The Destination: Sydney, Australia

“Australia has always been somewhere I wanted to visit; I heard so many stories from friends who had either travelled or emigrated there, and after a friend moved there this year, I booked my ticket, packed my bags and charged the camera batteries for a 3 week adventure to Whyalla, Adelaide and Sydney (including Manly Wharf). You only realise how vast Australia really is once you’re there – and three weeks wasn’t enough to be able to take in the history and culture of the place!”

Clinton Jordaan is originally from South Africa, but has been a London resident for about 10 years. He’s been interested in photography just as long, but got into it seriously after picking up his first digital compact, a Nikon Cool Pix. Since then, he’s upgraded to a Nikon DSLR and has an endless collection of lenses (which never seems to be enough!), while his interest in photography is largely influenced by his studies in architecture – as such, his work tends to revolve around built forms or inhabited spaces as a subject.

The Destination: Varanasi, India

“I love London, but love getting out of it even more, and one of my most inspiring destinations has got be India. It’s a country with a multifaceted composition, which sometimes shocks, but more often than not amazes and humbles you. Traditions are still strong in India, and the one thing that seems to flow through every aspect of life is their religion, Hinduism. Varanasi, also known as the city of Shiva, is a place that portrays this view well.”

Photographer, educator and global citizen Anya Dennis is a native of Philadelphia and photographed her first subject at age 18. While attending Clark Atlanta University, she travelled to Ghana, West Africa in 1997; this experience gave her the opportunity to create images that reflected Africa’s complex cultural and geographical terrain – and it was this journey that gave birth to her passion for photography. In 2000, while conducting research in Ethiopia, Egypt, Israel and Brazil, Anya used photography to explore religion and its impact on society. Her zest for teaching and the inspiration she draws from photography led her back to Africa in 2003 to teach English in the small village of Abbiyi Addi, expanding her photography portfolio. Today, Anya continues to shoot real life subject matter around the world and her published work can be found in Free Magazine and Souls: Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture and Society (vol.). l.

The Destinations: Bali, Japan, Korea, Malaysia

“Astonished by her beauty, I was intrigued with Bali’s ethereal landscapes, vivid colours and ancient spiritual practices. As for Malaysia, it’s rich culture and ancient customs sparked my interest, while Japan lured me with her colourful cultural, traditional and social norms. Korea’s remarkable palaces and temples attracted me to this unique country, which is heavily rooted in Confucianism and Buddhism.”

21-year-old photography student George hails from Maidenhead, near Reading (UK). He first got into photography when he was an eight-year-old, after taking his first film of photos on a disposable camera – and by the time he discovered some of his father’s black and white images at the age of 14, he was hooked. He’s currently studying Photography and Digital Design at Bath Spa University, and believes travel photography gives him a new perspective, adding: “It’s easy to discover new things in a foreign place but sometimes difficult to find something new to photograph in your home city.”

The Destination: Dar Es Salaam & Zanzibar

“I was particularly interested in photographing Dar Es Salaam & Zanzibar in East Africa for the simple reason that it would be so different to anything I had shot before. I was looking forward to being completely out of my comfort zone and seeing how I would interpret it through my camera. Would I focus on poverty, people, or my own personal experience of the place? I ended up doing all three.”

Becky lives in Nottingham, UK and has been shooting since she got her first point and shoot at the age of 10. She fell in love with photography as soon as she got her first prints back from the developers and it hasn’t lost that magic for her since. She believes that the move into digital photography has opened up the opportunity to experiment, to take a lot more photographs and to still have that magic when you first see them up on the screen. She particularly enjoys travel photography, with an emphasis on city locations, signs and buildings – but her favourite photographs are always linked to people. For Becky, living and enjoying the travel experience comes first, rather than feeling like she’s spent the whole trip behind the lens.

The Destination: Cuba

“Cuba is a country I have wanted to visit for a really long time and I was especially keen to go while Castro was still alive and involved in their government. It’s a country with a really rich political history, a wonderful musical reputation, lots of dancing and beautiful architecture – how could you not want to visit?! In particular I was interested in seeing a communist country in action, to see how this ideology which is almost forgotten in the west, could translate into a living, breathing, working country and whether it really would be or feel that different.
Cuba is a truly fascinating country. We met a man sitting on a park bench as we had a little break in Havana who said he thought his country was like a living museum, a statement which is both poetic and true. Then he offered to sell us some cigars. That’s Cuba.”
