It begins with a bang. All of a sudden, a man is running for his life – through walls and space, in order to escape something. It’s only after a few moments that the audience realises that he is running on a treadmill, hovering above their heads…but it’s quickly descending, as the audience is far below the chaos taking place.

This explosion of energy is just the beginning; for the next hour and a half, Fuerzabruta’s electric blend of modern dance and theatrical performance will have the whole audience gazing up in wonder.  It’s an amazing show: and almost seven years ago, Fuerzabruta inaugurated the newly-opened Roundhouse as a performing space. Since then, the show has toured the globe, with a 5-year stop in New York. The show is still luring people into the chaos of dancing limbs, gravity-defying pools of water and the chance to walk on air as one of the talented performers pulls you through his or her “cloud in the sky.”

For 100 nights, visitors will find themselves huddled into the centre of the Roundshouse’s main hall wondering how performers are able to defy gravity with such ease. After a bit of neck strain comes on, the show suddenly turns into a bit of a night club. Loud music pulses through the room as visitors are encouraged to dance and smile. The show’s name means “brute force”, and the performers want visitors to not just see this force through their performances, but to also feel it and share it with others. (Words: Barbara Cole)
Fuerzabruta is playing until the 2nd March 2014 at the Roundhouse. There’s also a special New Year’s Eve show featuring the NYC Downlow DJs. For more info, visit: www.roundhouse.org.uk/fuerzabruta

The Roundhouse is silent, except for the murmuring of a few visitors and the shuffling of feet. Instead of the floor being packed with concertgoers or seats for the latest performance in the round, a few dozen people are milling around, their faces turned upward. They stand and stare, occasionally breaking their gaze to glance over at a traveling companion. Instead of a performance on stage in the Main Space, visitors are appreciating the Roundhouse itself, as it is featured in the new commission “Timepiece” by noted  artist Conrad Shawcross. It is a large-scale light and mechanical installation that uses the ceiling and walls of the Roundhouse to depict a faceless clock. The clock’s three hands keep to the actual time, and it uses the 24 supporting beams of the Main Space as half-hour markers.

Timepiece+-+conrad+Shawcross
For those wanting to add to the experience, the Roundhouse will be featuring various artists performing in conjunction with Timepiece. Choreographer Wayne McGregor has put together a series of dance pieces to coordinate with the Timepiece. Siobhan Davies Dance will take a different angle and feature dancers that manipulate time. The London Contemporary Orchestra will also feature a sound-walk that begins in Primrose Hill and then travels to the Roundhouse all while performing KLANG Die 24 Stunden des Tage (The 24 Hours of the Day). The programme will allow the audience to experience the hours of the day through sound, taste, smell, and visual perceptions. The Roundhouse will also host two Live Lates nights, with the first one on August 8th featuring spoken word and electronica, and the second one on August 15 which features circus dance performances from Iona Kewney and Joseph Quimby.
Admission is pay-what-you-like, and it closes on  August 25. For more info, visit: www.roundhouse.org.uk/conrad-shawcross-timepiece

Those up for adrenaline-tinged entertainment might want to visit this year’s CircusFest. Following success in 2007 and 2010, CircusFest 2012 may prove to be the most exciting of the trio as it aims to bring together global circus performers in a range of diverse acts, blending various forms of circus-related art in a five-week extravaganza.

Starting from March 28th, The Roundhouse will be featuring major premiering performances in their main space, and audiences can join the ranks as circus performances are brought to a whole new level. In Il Pixel Rosso: The Great Spavaldos, audience members (two at a time) are taken on a video-powered journey into a flying-trapeze double act’s hidden history. One can even learn trapeze skills from experts in the Roundhouse car park.

Professor Vanessa’s Wondershow is also opened for the first time at CircusFest: a green space turned into a vintage circus (dating back to the ‘30s and ‘50s) where one can marvel  at a number of awesome spectacles.  The professor is also the director of the Sheffield National Fairground Archive and the world’s leading expert on circus history, so you’re guaranteed to experience the golden age of the circus with original sideshows, aerial performances, contemporary cabaret, a promenade experience studded with headless women, an insect circus and Electra – the 27,000-volted woman.

Equally stimulating for the less sensational-inclined are film screenings, a photographic exhibition by Phil Fisk and talks with Vanessa Toulmin and John Paul Zaccarini, leading rope artist and circus director. (Words: Li Yin Soh)

CircusFest 2012 is at the Roundhouse from 28th March to 29th April 2012. Click here for more information.

After months of partnering with the immensely notable visual label ANTIVJ, Flying Lotus makes his UK debut at London’s creative hub Roundhouse on October 22nd. From being an unfamiliar face within L.A.’s melting pot of music, Lotus (real name Steven Ellison) is now regarded as one of the world’s most innovative creator of fresh remixes, collaborations and one-off musical installations.

Although he’s worked with the diverse likes of Erykah Badu, Thom Yorke and Suicidal Tendencies – it’s quite difficult to know what to expect from his next show. With only three performances  under his belt with ANTIVJ (the other two in Paris and Los Angeles) there’s been plenty  of  hype – but judging from the stunning visuals used in his recent music video for “MmmHmm” from Warp Films,  his boundless  imagination  should guarantee we’re looking at a dazzling performance – an exhibition even – in Roundhouse’s main space. Not sure what inspired the Roundhouse to tranform their old dinery into this stylish hangout, serving a minimalist menu of neuvo-continental fare, but whatever the reasons, they’re pretty much onto a winner.  Made In Camden  feels  like it’s been transplanted from the slicker side of East Village, New York (there’s American style booths and a  cool montage of Roundhouse gig posters plastered on a wall), but there’s nothing typical  about the food.  While you might find fries (when I first came to MIC, they seemed to reluctantly appear  on the menu as  Fried Potatoes) , there’s no sarnies (not even a panini) and the rest of the menu seemas inspired by fine dining, without being too pricey.

Their lunch special – the £10 hearty lunch – is a great opportunity to sample their main  dishes, along with a very  rich and superb pea and wild garlic soup with chilli oil and creme fraise, and a choice of one side  (cous cous, fries or salad) or a selection of breads.  The list of small dishes  are pretty eclectic and creative (although I was mildly fearful of the wild pigeon) and I opted for the seared tuna, lightly wrapped in the wafer-thin, almost crisp like brik pastry, served with spring greens and yuzu aoili.  Two words: Good heavens.  The tender slabs  melt in the mouth, further enhanced by a relish of a creamy condiment dotted on the plate.  But be warned – if you choose the artisan bread  to go along with it, you will be full – too full – and is almost a meal in itself.  That, though, is only a tiny quirk, for a very memorable – and dare I say award-winning –  lunch.  (Words: Matilda Egere-Cooper)
