I don’t what it was about this weekend’s Lumiere festival (it’s just a bunch of pretty light displays), but it brought the entire planet to London. Like, seriously. Roads were even closed off to accommodate the extra crowds of people. But through the madness, I managed to hit up a different area every day – Kings Cross, Piccadilly and Charing Cross – and thankfully, survived.  All shot on a Canon 5D Mark I, 24-105mm lens.

Taking the supperclub out of the front room and into the public domain comes the mother of all pop-up competitions. Pitting the top supperclub chefs from around London against one another, Flavour Expats brings a whirlwind tour of the culinary world to the event space upstairs at Palm 2 in Clapton.

More than 10 countries will be represented in this battle of culinary heritage. Expats from around the globe including the Phillipines, Mauritius, Australia and Italy are in the mix and ready to lock horns over who or what makes their homeland gastronomy better than the rest.

12087888334_e82410397a_c

A sneak peak pf the chef’s talents last month brought us tempura squid from Japan, Kangaroo pie and basil gelato, amongst much, much more. All chefs involved have run successful supperclubs in the front rooms of their fixed abode and have now been united under this umbrella event over the next two months. Chefs are paired for each night and diners are presented with six courses from each country: so make sure you come hungry. The cooking participants are passionate chefs keen to highlight their love of their country filled with a knowledge and enthusiasm that is contagious. Choosing your favourite will be no walk in the park, but you can certainly get stuffed trying! (Words: Laura Thornley)

The next Flavour Expats event takes place on 8th March (France VS Mauritius). For more info, visit: flavourexpats.wordpress.com

Walking through the bustle of central London on a Friday night, you’re likely to see all kinds of people on the streets, from tourists to diplomats. Pedestrians share the road with all the familiar wheeled commuters: black cabs ferrying passengers to West End shows, city buses packed on two levels with commuters anxious to get home, cyclists artfully weaving through traffic, and a pack of roller skaters tearing around them all to keep up with the lead marshal. 482136_493110614048005_1223107859_n What you’ve just seen gliding past is the latest outing of the London Friday Night Skate. Every week, if the weather is good, skaters on both inline (rollerblades) and quad (traditional roller skates) dart around the streets of London for 2 hours, with a break in the middle of the route. The course changes every week, though it always begins at Hyde Park Corner. From there, skaters might travel over the bridge into Vauxhall or through Regents Park and Oxford Street. The skate is meant to be fun, but also challenging. The LFNS recommends that skaters should be able to stop, start, turn and control their speed on hills with experience street skating. For those looking for a slightly less intense, but no less enjoyable skating session, the folks behind LFNS also host the Sunday Stroll. Again, as long as Mother Nature cooperates, this skates takes off every Sunday from the east end of the Serpentine Road. The course here changes every week too, but the pace is much more relaxed and terrains easier for skaters to negotiate. All skates are free and staffed by volunteers. As long as you’re comfortable moving on the streets in skates, you’re welcome to join in on the fun. (Words: Barbara Cole) For more information visit: www.lfns.co.uk

The friendly and vibrant Southbank Centre hosts hundreds of musicians, artists and performers every summer – but this summer is even more special. This summer will bring the Southbank Centre’s Festival of Neighbourhood, a colourful celebration of neighbourliness, exploring what it really means to live side by side. Contributions from local, national and international communities and artists have helped compile the assortment of art installations, performances, talks, gardens and exhibitions that create the three-month long festival.

The transformation of the Centre’s 21-area site is remarkable. Southbank’s ‘neighbourhood’ has been fitted out with orchards and gardens, murals, graffiti art and brightly painted sculptures and installations made of everything from foliage and concrete to wheelbarrows and doorbells. Amongst all this sits Beanotown, an iconic (if imaginary) neighbourhood filled with dastardly delights created to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Beano comic. The Royal Festival Hall itself boasts a rooftop collection of 42 flags from artists Bob & Roberta Smiths, covered with questions spurring you to consider your own ideas of neighbourhood and community.

The festival’s programme includes archive photography exhibition Lambeth Treasures, an exhibition dedicated to mapping the incredible 2000 year-old cultural history of Lambeth. Performances are also in demand, with family circus troop Cirque Alfonse’s Timber!, a daring and acrobatic display involving lumberjack saws, and a world premiere of youth dance company ZooNation’s Groove Down The World retelling The Wizard of Oz with a hip-hop twist. Another highlight is cultural icon Yoko Ono’s Meltdown, a collection of music and film featuring artists from all over the globe in a dedication to music, feminism, environmentalism and peace activism.

In fact, the list of wonders taking place during the Festival of Neighbourhood seems nearly inexhaustible. If there was ever a time to get into the neighbourly spirit then now is it! The next few months at Southbank don’t just offer a wealth of fun cultural goings-on but a real close-up look at what makes a good neighbourhood, and what we can do to be better neighbours to each other – not just in Southbank, but everywhere we go. (Words: Nori Bell-Bhuiyan)

On until September 8th. For more information visit: http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whatson/festivals-series/festival-of-neighbourhood

I front…a band called Submotion Orchestra, which was born in Leeds. At the time,  I was playing a lot of dub/DnB and Jazz, but I wanted to find some kind of crossover in the middle. Dubstep was just beginning to surface and yet no one was doing it live. It seemed like the perfect platform for this new idea, and it’s worked. I loved Leeds and have a huge amount of respect for the musicians and music scene but I needed a change and moved to London a year ago.  The capital is incredible. It’s a bewildering, manic and constantly surprising place to live.

The area in London I call home is…Stoke Newington. It’s full of buff mums and trendy babies but I like it! Some of the restaurants on Church Street are amazing and the area is full of musicians, artists and likeminded people.

I tend to get my threads from…Supreme Being and SS20 (Oxford). Supreme Being have endorsed Submotion so I get a lot of amazing free clobber from them, which is nice. SS20 is the shop I always got my threads from as a kid. I still think it’s one of the best clothes shops around.

To enjoy London’s nightlife, you should…To be honest, I don’t really go out if I’m not playing ‘cos I spend of my time playing in clubs and venues anyway! The best venues I have played in London are probably the Jazz Cafe in Camden which is great and The Coronet in Elephant and Castle. For amazing free music get down to the foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Southbank every Friday evening. Or you get on a bus and go to Subdub in Leeds, which is by far the best night I have been to in the UK!

If I was mayor, I would…Ban 4×4’s, give everyone a free pushbike, start funding the arts again, ban people wearing scarves with a t-shirt, and do a grime collaboration with Boris Johnson.

My favourite spot to check out art is…in any toilet, in any nightclub, anywhere in London.

I’d kindly tell a tourist to…promote the hell out of Submotion when they get home.

The things I miss when I leave London are…my girlfriend, the food, the noise, the energy, the constant chaos, my piano.

My soundtrack to London would include:

Jibber” by Ruckspin, “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know” by Donny Hathaway, “Boho Dance” by Joni Mitchell, “The Peacocks” by Bill Evans, “Helplessly Hoping” by Crosby, Stills and Nash and “Gold” by Darkstar.

The album Finest Hour by Submotion Orchestra is out now.  For more info, visit www.submotion.co.uk

I am…from Nottingham but I’ve lived in London for 5 years now and I’m mostly happy here. I like the opportunities here and the variety of life.

The area in London I call home is…East London

I’ve got to have a meal at… home mostly but I do like Nandos! haha..

I tend to get my threads from…Paul Smith, Fred Perry and then from anywhere that has threads that catch my eye.

To enjoy London’s nightlife, you should…be careful in Soho. Go steady in Camden. Mind your feet down Brick Lane and watch your wallet in west london.

If I was mayor, I would…wear a good suit and listen to commuters. I would also pay more attention to the underprivileged youth.

My favourite spot to check out art is… all around me. Art is everywhere in London, from the walls in a gallery to the brick walls on a city street.

I’d kindly tell a tourist to…not be too offended by bust commuters! haha

The things I miss when I leave London are…my friends and my bed.

My soundtrack to London would include:

Bitches Brew by Miles Davies – I’ve listened to it loads in London. It literally sounds like a medley of feeling and thoughts.

Son Of A Gun by The La’s – the lyrics actually tell the story of one pinnacle point in my life. Amazing yet simple description of the fighting soul.

Liam Bailey will be performing at the Wireless Festival, Hyde Park on July 3rd.  Click here to visit his website or follow him on Twitter: @liambailey

I might be a digital junkie, but much honour is due to any ‘tog committed to 35mm film and the arguably old-school process of image making. In that way, Kevin Morosky’s shots feel sorta nostalgic, but his subjects are modern and youthful, and his keen eye for documenting life has earned him enviable spots in rags like Dazed & Confused, Vice, Attitude and RWD.

Marques Toliver

So, I was pretty pleased to hear his best work has now been brought together for a month-ish long exhibition at The Orange Dot Gallery. “Six” explores the legendary separation theory (“The idea that we are so closely connected is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard,” he gushes) and offers up some hot snaps to gawk at, in their certifiably cool glory. The private view with special guests performers + such is a roadblock, but there’s plenty of time to see Mr Morosky’s work from June 9th until the 30th. Unmissable, really.   (Words: Matilda Egere-Cooper)
