We’re just days away from honouring Her Majesty’s 60 year reign, and with that, there’s a host of festivities and celebrations kicking off that’ll no doubt be fit for a Queen.  But our personal pick is a boisterous street bash taking place on the East side this coming Sunday, because if anyone remembers the party The Book Club threw last year for Will and Kate last year, they would have already swiped the last of the priority entry wristbands as it’s guaranteed to be another roadblock.

But never fear – if you haven’t got a band, you can still head down and enjoy the brass bands, bunting and  good brew – not to mention worthy tunes from the pop-loving Guilty Pleasure DJs, old-schoolers Amp & Deck, and performances from the retro Underbling and Vow and  alt-folkster Gorgeous George who’s get us revved up as we enjoy a screening of the Jubilee Procession. Then there’s the food, glorious food, which includes lovely cakes courtesy of Lilli Vanilli, Burgers by way of Bukowski, Hurly Burly veggie delights and the nation’s fave – chicken tikka masala.  So get your glad rags ready folks because Sunday, June 3rd is gonna be another brilliant – and British! – day and night  to remember.

March 8th sees The Book Club pay tribute to Mod culture, with a night of vintage tunes and a screening of Dean Chalkley’s The New Faces.

The late 1950s and early 60s Mod movement saw a wave of British youngsters embrace African-American soul and blues music, and styling themselves in sharp suits and angular shift dresses. But the subjects of photographer Chalkley’s short film are a gang of youthful 20-somethings who have bought Mod culture into the 21st century with a studied authenticity and photogenic panache. Chalkley first noticed the groovy crew swinging away at his DJ night Shake!, and was intrigued by their dapper style and slick dance moves. United by their love of the music and style of Mod culture, the gang were first shot by Chalkley back in 2010 and became the focus of his photographic exhibition at The Book Club. Chalkley was unsure what to call the show but it was the Modfather himself Paul Weller, who suggested the name The New Faces.

Now Chalkley returns to TBC to screen a 20-minute film all about his favourite new Mods. The screening promises to be an “hypnotic visual experience”, as well as a cultural document of the enduring Mod movement. But the celebrations don’t end there, as Chalkley and members of the The New Faces collective will be around to spin a selection of rare soul, rhythm & blues, ska, Latin and boogaloo. And you can be sure to look forward to some nifty dance moves: “You should see them dance,” Chalkley has said of the modern day Mods, “they look good and they’ve got the moves!” No doubt then that The New Faces will have you boogie-ing on down till the early hours of the morning. (Words: Stephanie Soh)

Entry: Free, 6pm-2am (7:30pm screening). Visit www.wearetbc.com for more info.

Located on Great Eastern Street – home to some of East London’s hippest venues – East Village Club certainly manages to hold its own. The underground club plays host to a variety of DJ-led nights where the music is the main event, rather than acting as a backdrop for flirty chit-chat. Expect nights such as Sounds of the Underground and Inner Rhythm, which fully embrace the urban music scene, pumping out house, bass, dancehall, and hip-hop to an energetic crowd of music-lovers and creative types. The upstairs Villain Bar is pretty hip too, feeling like it’s been put together by a bunch of over-enthusiastic art students, with its mix of futuristic neon lighting and recycled materials (think leather car seats, airplane windows, and convenience store signs). Rooms can be hired for private parties and – yes – karaoke nights, which adds to East Village’s cool and kooky vibe, minus the pretentiousness.  So leave that body-con dress at home, put on your edgiest outfit, and head to the East End to shake a leg. (Words: Stephanie Soh)

In just two short years, The Book Club in Shoreditch has become one of the best-known alternative nightspots in East London. With a colourful and creative calendar of events incorporating arts and craft, talks, film screenings, DJs and dance classes, its quirky manifesto of ‘drinking and thinking’ has proved a big hit with the East End’s arty hipsters.

We love it too, so we thought it best to let you know that from the October 17th to the 23rd, ‘the Queen of Hoxton’s younger sister’ will be celebrating its birthday in style with a weeklong calendar of activities, including some old favourites.

Draw the seven deadly sins at a lifedrawing session with a twist, battle others at ping pong, learn about the history of perfume at Scratch + Sniff or create a winning volcanic explosion at Monday’s Science Fair. But if that all sounds a bit too much like hard work, just come for a boogie and a slice of birthday cake on the Friday or Saturday to the sounds of resident DJ Filthy Duke plus special guests.

Expect streamers, party poppers, happy young people and frivolous fun times – Happy birthday Book Club!  (Words: Aoife Moriarty)

If you thought Shoreditch had the monopoly on all the hippest nights in town, you clearly haven’t hit up YoYos at Notting Hill Arts Club.  Hosted by DJs Seb Chew and Leo Greenslade, the super-popular night – which is an acronym for You’re Only Young Once –  has been going on for nine years strong, earning a rep for pulling off the liveliest parties you’d least expect for a Thursday night.   Up and comers dominate the early part of the evening with acoustic performances, followed by an unpredictable mashup of  hip-hop, dubstep and bassline-heavy music from the resident DJs and the odd super-star guest, such as A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip on June 16th (check out our photo gallery here).  So with the music being ridiculously superb, expect to see the young and stylish crowd mounting tables and chairs in the spirit of a good ol’ fashioned house party – and if you can get over the guest-list only policy, the photo ID and painfully lengthy queues, you’ll pretty much get with this!
