Hip Hop may have come a long way through the years and for all those who weren’t around to witness its humble beginnings, here’s an opportunity to catch up. Wild Style – widely considered the most influential and essential film on 1980s hip hop culture – is 30 years old and Oval Space cinema are reviving a bit of its attitude and authority tonight. Made in 1983 and directed by Charlie Ahearn,

Wild Style was a seminal piece of cinema and the first to record South Bronx living. It featured the relatively unknown disciplines of b-boying, graffiti artists, MC-ing and turntablism – so synonymous with Hip Hop now. wildstyle1 Many of the cast were straight from the scene, representing the culture they were developing (from within around five boroughs in New York) including Flash Five Freddy, Grandmaster Flash and The Rock Steady Crew. The film has famously been sampled on albums by everyone from Nas, the Beastie Boys and Jurassic 5. Naturally the soundtrack is one of the essential Hip Hop albums to date and some of its music disciplines play testament at this event. The night features a screening of the film followed by a late night event with guest DJs including Ghostpoet, Tim Westwood, Alexander Nut and Patchwork Pirates: all masters of their art and truly influenced by this old skool style. The low fi effects of Wild Style may be a far cry from the big budget bling we see today but there can’t be much more authentic than the atmosphere of this film. And the night promises to revive some of those vibes too. (Words: Laura Thornley) For more info visit: www.ovalspace.co.uk

February is traditionally a very busy month for cinema goers. With the awards season reaching its climax on both sides of the Atlantic, the nominated films usually dominate the list of choices for a night out at the movies. So during such a period the upcoming pop–up screening of the classic 80s sci-fi adventure Back to the Future may seem like the last of your priorities – but there are a couple of reasons why we believe it deserves your attention.

To begin with, Back to the Future could  make a great double-bill with Oscar-nominated Flight, since both are directed by the award-winning director Robert Zemeckis. Furthermore, Flight marks the return of the visionary director to live-action films after eight years of experimentation with 3D motion capture techniques in films such as The Polar Express and Beowulf. So what a better way to celebrate this occasion than by watching his first truly great film?

Secondly, this pop-up screening will take place at the restaurant Paradise at Kensal Green where you can watch the film while enjoying some delicious food. Isn’t this a more appealing option than say eating a popcorn box while watching the realistic scenes of torture in Zero Dark Thirty?

But seriously, the fact that  the term ‘classic’ is justifiably applied to Back to the Future should be enough of a reason to go re-watch the film. Taking the premise of time-travelling to thrilling, entertaining as well as intriguing places and offering us two characters that have secured their place in the pop pantheon (Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd’s Dr Emmett Brown) it is one of those films that you will always get back to and lingers in your memory much longer than each year’s Oscar favourite. (Words: Apostolos Kostoulas)

The pop-up screening of Back to the Future will take place on Sunday 17 February at 2:30 pm as part of the Paradise by way of the Silver Screen series co- produced by Paradise and Lexi Cinema. For more information go to: www.thelexicinema.co.uk

If you are the kind of person that knows where their towel is (and we most certainly are) then I won’t need to tell you about whats happening at Hackney Empire this July. This main London date forms part of a wider national tour of a new stage/radio show of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy written and directed by Dirk Maggs. The legendary story started life on the wireless and has since been seen in many other guises from TV series and books to a film in 2005.

If you are new to Hitchhiker’s, Don’t Panic! You will, of course, be made most welcome. You can expect a blend of quaintly English sci-fi humour such as answers to the ultimate question of life and the demolition of Earth which is  “almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea”. The actor Simon Jones from the original TV series will be playing Arthur Dent (in his dressing gown once again) and if that’s not enough, Monty Python’s Terry Jones will be playing Voice of the Book. The Guide has developed an amazing cult following mostly for its off-kilter humour and madcap philosophical musings but also because it’s loads of fun. Shall we see you there? (Words: Laura Thornley)

Tickets at Hackney Empire are soon to sell out  but local performances are available at Woking and Bromley.  For more info, visit www.hitchhikerslive.com

The inclusion of Alfred Hitchcock in the list of names of exceptional British artists –  whose work will be celebrated in the  London 2012 festival – should not come to anyone as a surprise. After all, Hitch is unrivalled in his skill to create films that are not only great works of art but also exhilarating pieces of entertainment.

The most intriguing aspect of this aptly named The Genius of Hitchcock event is that it will give an opportunity to film lovers from around the world to be the first to see some of the director’s early silent British films, in newly restored copies at various London venues, with the additional bonus of live music accompaniment by a number of up-and –coming British composers.

Alfred Hitchcock
The three films that will be screened during the festival (The Pleasure Garden, The Lodger and Blackmail ) may often descend into melodrama, as it was the norm in the early days of cinema, but nevertheless their stories revolve around titillating subjects such as murder, deceit and blackmail.  This would soon become a staple of Hitchcock’s oeuvre and they all include at least one classic sequence that makes it easy to understand why Hitch became the true master of suspense. A case in point is the climatic chase scene in Blackmail that is stunningly staged by Hitchcock inside the British Museum. Imagine now how exciting it will be to watch the whole film just outside the museum. Sounds like a great way to spend a summer night in the city. (Words: Apostolos Kostoulas)

The first screening takes place on June 28th but for more information, visit www.whatson.bfi.org.uk

Before you throw your hands up in disgust at the thought of another remake; relax! Apocalypse Now is being re-released back into cinemas and no, it’s not even in 3D.  In fact, it doesn’t need it; the re-mastered 1979 war drama is more epic than ever.  Under Francis Ford Coppola’s direction you sweat in the stressful action of the Vietnam War and fear senseless death with Captain Benjamin Lillard (Martin Sheen). He leads his crew on a secret mission to kill an ‘insane’ renegade – Green Beret Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando) who has lost sight of his duties and become a tribal God in Cambodia. It’s a story questioning the honour of war and so the images of death and destruction are still relevant to what’s on the news today and the acting is so superb that it transports you into the horror of the scorching war zone yourself. (Words: Selina Ditta)

In cinemas from May 27th.
