In 2012, an Ethiopian teenager named Abenezer Temesgen had a brilliant idea. His plan? To get disadvantaged kids off the streets of Addis Abba through skateboarding, even though he didn’t have the funds, equipment or even a skatepark. But since then, he’s shared his mission with the help of Californian photographer Sean Stromoe, and Ethiopia Skate was born – a thriving project that’s getting love from all around the world.

One supporter is Berlin-based photographer Daniel Reiter, who met the community in 2015. He decided to create a photo series of the scene and you can now check out those pics in an exhibition at Rich Mix next month. Some of Reiter’s gorgeous snaps will be sold as limited edition fine art prints and all profits will go towards to the project, which hopes to raise enough cash to install the nation’s first skatepark.

The exhibition runs from April 6 to April 28 in the Lower Café Gallery. Find out more about Ethiopia Skate at www.ethiopiaskate.org.

Live in London long enough and you’ll know that the Eastside doesn’t have the monopoly on good art – especially when festivals like Deptford X have been shining a spotlight on the modern movers and art makers around the South-east for the past 15 years.  So it’s a welcome return this week for the capital’s longest running contemporary visual arts festival, which will be offering its usual eclectic mix of installations, performances and  exhibitions.

This year, Bob & Roberta Smith take the lead with a new commission that declares “Art Makes People Powerful!“, and it’s a theme that resonates amongst the rest of the works from Deptford’s creative community. This includes Dan Holliday’s screen printed posters which make an intriguing statement about the history and development of the local area. Bernadette Russell’s 366 Days of Kindness project  is another highlight, as it warmly presents the results of an exploration into the  power of good deeds, following the 2011 riots. This interactive installation – which features 366 balloons with messages  from Londoners which are given out at the end of the day – made its debut at the Southbank Centre in July and will no doubt be a big hit once again when it’s recreated for Deptford X.

Harry Pye and Friends - TinTin in Deptford

As for the rest of the programme, a group show from Harry Pye and friends will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Albany performing arts centre, while 8 Studios From Here will be a powerful demonstration of what can happen when artists work together for the better good of the independent art scene.  All that’s left is even more of the creative, the quirky and the sublime from the Fringe shows, parties and other events which perfectly sums up why Deptford art has really got it going on. All power to the people!

On until October 6th.  For more info, visit: www.deptfordx.org

What’s better than a party on the East side? A FREE party. So clear your diary this weekend as a massive bash is going down on Saturday at Hewett Street, bringing together the best in design, food, music and art to celebrate the creative block before the area is sadly no more.

Crowd at Protein

There will be stalls from renowned locals including Not Another BillGetMe!super/colliderJaguar Shoes Collective, live painting and exhibitions from  Rockwell HousePayneShurvell and Not Tom, complimentary shaves courtesy of the premier Murdock, bike signage and cycle merch from Ornamental Conifer and Aesop’s Tokyo Bike – and of course, a crazy amount of food.   Elliot’s (and their infamous burgers), American-styled Rita’s Bar & Dining and  pop-up market Street Feast will be rolling through,  while exclusive drinks from the Protein “locals only” bar include London Fields Brewery lager, Dalston Cola,  Hewett Street Slushies and that good stuff from the DunneFrankowski coffee shop.

Revellers can also take part in a raffle with prizes from Dishoom, Nike and Secret Cinema, and  all proceeds from the day will go to children’s charity Hackney Pirates. Sounds amazing, right?  We’re always down for fun and food in the name of creative community, so no guesses for where we’ll be on September 22nd between 12-9pm…

Supper clubs – a one-night experience run by enthusiasts and open to the general public – have taken off in the past couple of years. They’re now very easy to organise and publicise through social media, and pre-sell tickets through services like Eventbrite or Paypal. But going to a supper club is a great way to eat good food in unusual settings and meet new people. One thing I particularly like about them is that all payment is done in advance – unlike going out for dinner at a restaurant there are no nasty moments when the bill arrives! So here are five of the best, illustrating the diversity available. There are lots of resources for finding supper clubs – for example Guestaurant or my site – londonpopups.com – see if you get inspired by these, and then get involved!
Burger Monday

Daniel Young runs this group, aiming to elevate the burger to its rightful position as a culinary highlight. He gets a great butcher to make a burger, and a great chef (including teams from Hawksmoor and Salt Yard) to devise a three course menu around it. But beware – this is the hottest ticket in town, as the most recent events have sold out within 20 minutes. Daniel also runs other events like SpagWednesday, which are easier to get tickets to.http://youngandfoodish.com/events/burgermonday/( Picture courtesy of Paul Winch-Furness)

Goz from Plusixfive

Plusixfive (pictured)

The +65/plusixfive supper club is devoted to Singaporean food (+65 is the international dialling code for Singapore), and the founder and resident chef Goz (pictured) and friends regularly entertain people in his home, cooking classic dishes with a modern twist. Guests bring payment (a minimum amount is suggested) and a bottle. If you’re looking for a fun, friendly supper club in someone’s house then this is a good place to start. http://plusixfive.wordpress.com

The Cornish Grill
This is a twist on a theme – a pop-up Sunday lunch. What started off as a pop-up barbecue in a pub garden has turned into probably the best sunday roast in London. Founder Matthew Chatfield supplies Cornish produce to some of the top London restaurants, and got the idea after hearing chefs describe how they cooked Sunday roasts. Lunches take place onthe last Sunday of the month, and cost £30 for 3 courses. http://www.cornishgrill.co.uk/
ferdiesfoodlab

ferdiesfoodlab is a regular supper club run by Simon Fernandez. Simon started a few years ago, as an extension of cooking for friends, and this has now evolved into regular banquets at Toynbee Hall, a grade II listed building. The events are usually fortnightly, on a Friday evening, and a minimum contribution of £45 is required from all guests. These always look like amazing parties, and have attracted some really good reviews. http://www.ferdiesfoodlab.co.uk/

Niko B’s Chocolates
Another twist – a supper club devoted to chocolates. This is an offshoot from the main Niko B organic chocolate business, and holds regular themed supper clubs where chocolate features in all courses. Events cost approximately £25, and are held at the Avo Hotel in Dalston. http://www.nikobchocolates.com/Events(2221275).htm (Words: Dan Calladine)

Stumbling across this space – out of the crazy fug of Dalston High Street –  is like being welcomed into secret community of green-fingered peace-loving Londoners… and that’s not even too much of an exaggeration. It’s got the authentic feel of a space designed for and used by people who love it and live nearby. Built as part of an art project, the garden has been kept alive by the community that uses it; there’s a covered seating area, a (surprisingly clean) toilet, home-made scarecrows, a herb garden, and it’s even got a working pizza/bread oven! It’s open every day 11am-6pm (weather permitting), and sits right opposite Dalston Junction overground station so if you’re kicking around the area and the sun’s out, there’s absolutely no excuse for not going in to have a look and/or having a fabulous picnic. Just see if you can keep it a secret! (Words: Zoe Dawes)

While you may struggle to pronounce “Slideluck Potshow” on first attempt, this shouldn’t be a put-off – after all, if there’s one thing I personally can’t resist it’s a night of art AND epicurean delights!

Confused? Well, Slideluck Potshow London III is the third time the capital will be taking part in this international project where participants are treated to an exhibition of the flavours that make their city unique.

The event promises fresh bursts of original art and photography compiled into an eclectic slideshow by talented curator and editor Yumi Goto. The theme? “Multiculturalism Works!” But before you settle down for the show you can indulge in conversation and mastication (it means to chew, get your mind out of the gutter) at a dinner, which is supplied by… well, everyone.

Attendees bring a plate of whatever their signature dish is and then the communal banquet begins! This non‐profit platform for the sharing of good art and good food is being held at SNAP Studios on June 18th – tickets are only £5 and if interested, click here! (Words: Beth Downey)
