What we’ve been up to… The Bengal Lancer

Finding a good curry is never easy. Despite it being one of the top cuisines in England, we are often served nothing like what you can find inside India. But, if you are on the hunt for some authentic cuisine, you might want to stumble into the Bengal Lancer. It may not look like a palace but that isn’t everything. The atmosphere is friendly, the staff helpful and the food warming.

The menu reads like something a bit different: cumin parsnips, wild fish, flower of Bengal and Sabjee Begun pie. The vegetarian selection is strong (which you would expect from an Indian restaurant) but the meat and fish are also appealing. We tried Lamb Karahi, chicken Bhuna and Goan Fish Curry: fresh, spicy with a hint of coconut. Our vegetarian dishes were spicy and sizzling paneer tikka, served alongside a cooling and creamy Malai Kofta. The prices are reasonable if you chose wisely and the dishes filling. On our visit on a Monday night, the restaurant was packed – so they currently can do no wrong right now. (Words: Laura Thornley)
