There seems to be a jazz/New Orleans/ blues trend emerging recently. Certainly with NOLA opening in Shoreditch and the highly anticipated The Great Gatsby out at the cinemas, we’re surrounded by the influence of an American era and its legacy  for good music, great drinks, having fun and just cutting loose.

So with that in mind, The Book Club, always in the know, brings us The Book Club Blues on Sunday, June 16th. Featuring live music from Dan Nash, a seasoned master of the blues, who has played extensively throughout the USA, there will also be taster lessons in blues dancing to get you into the swing of it all. So embrace the trend, find your dancing shoes, make sure to grab a bourbon while you’re there and enjoy. (Words: Lucy Palmer).

I’m one of those people that retailers love –  give me a holiday or event and I will buy decorations, bunting, cards and decorate cakes accordingly, but Valentine’s Day I have never got into. As someone who celebrated National Hugging Day and Christmas Jumper Day, even for me it never quite worked. But whether I like it or not February 14th  is fast approaching – so here’s you chance to embrace the soppiness of it all by heading to The Book Club for their very first Teen Dreams Prom.

The Book Club

Having been to previous Book Club events, it’s their attention to details that makes their nights so amazing – so here, you can  come dressed up as your favourite teen movie stereotype to spend ‘seven minutes in heaven’, tell your ‘one time at band camp’ stories to win prizes and play beer pong in true American film fashion. There is even the chance to vote for Prom King and Queen (maybe it will be you?) So get your tiara on and indulge in the Mac N Cheese and Chicken Wings  and grab one of their specially created cocktails. For all you singletons out there, the My Milkshake Brings All The Boys To The Yard (a strawberry variety with creme de framboise, vodka and whipped cream) sounds like it might just do the trick! (Words: Lucy Palmer)

Teen Dream Prom takes place on February 14th.  For more info, visit: www.facebook.com/events/314012568718689/

The Book Club is good at street parties – if you made it to their Diamond Jubilee bash you’ll already know. But if you didn’t make that, you’ve now got a second chance. This Bank Holiday weekend,  The Book Club is hosting another bigger and better street party: Bookstock. For all those born under the sign of Aquarius you will know that its inspired namesake made the history books as the ultimate festival – so they have set themselves quite a task. Sadly, it doesn’t look like the Stones will be making an appearance (too old anyway?) but there will be some amazing acts, food and fun for one last hooray to the summer months on August 26th.

Bookstock 2011

First up is the Dub Pistols, who will be performing old and new music live. Also taking care of the music side of things are We Were Evergreen and The Bikini Beach Band – masters of surf noir pop covers. Or if it’s a rave you’re after, then how about a glo-in-the-dark neon 90s ping pong rave? (I’m sold already).  There will also be tunes spun featuring Fleetmac Wood – a mashup of Fleetwood Mac re-edits.  Finally, expect locally produced food and booze, plus prizes for best fancy dress. You couldn’t ask for much more, right? (Words: Laura Thornley)

We’re just days away from honouring Her Majesty’s 60 year reign, and with that, there’s a host of festivities and celebrations kicking off that’ll no doubt be fit for a Queen.  But our personal pick is a boisterous street bash taking place on the East side this coming Sunday, because if anyone remembers the party The Book Club threw last year for Will and Kate last year, they would have already swiped the last of the priority entry wristbands as it’s guaranteed to be another roadblock.

But never fear – if you haven’t got a band, you can still head down and enjoy the brass bands, bunting and  good brew – not to mention worthy tunes from the pop-loving Guilty Pleasure DJs, old-schoolers Amp & Deck, and performances from the retro Underbling and Vow and  alt-folkster Gorgeous George who’s get us revved up as we enjoy a screening of the Jubilee Procession. Then there’s the food, glorious food, which includes lovely cakes courtesy of Lilli Vanilli, Burgers by way of Bukowski, Hurly Burly veggie delights and the nation’s fave – chicken tikka masala.  So get your glad rags ready folks because Sunday, June 3rd is gonna be another brilliant – and British! – day and night  to remember.

March 8th sees The Book Club pay tribute to Mod culture, with a night of vintage tunes and a screening of Dean Chalkley’s The New Faces.

The late 1950s and early 60s Mod movement saw a wave of British youngsters embrace African-American soul and blues music, and styling themselves in sharp suits and angular shift dresses. But the subjects of photographer Chalkley’s short film are a gang of youthful 20-somethings who have bought Mod culture into the 21st century with a studied authenticity and photogenic panache. Chalkley first noticed the groovy crew swinging away at his DJ night Shake!, and was intrigued by their dapper style and slick dance moves. United by their love of the music and style of Mod culture, the gang were first shot by Chalkley back in 2010 and became the focus of his photographic exhibition at The Book Club. Chalkley was unsure what to call the show but it was the Modfather himself Paul Weller, who suggested the name The New Faces.

Now Chalkley returns to TBC to screen a 20-minute film all about his favourite new Mods. The screening promises to be an “hypnotic visual experience”, as well as a cultural document of the enduring Mod movement. But the celebrations don’t end there, as Chalkley and members of the The New Faces collective will be around to spin a selection of rare soul, rhythm & blues, ska, Latin and boogaloo. And you can be sure to look forward to some nifty dance moves: “You should see them dance,” Chalkley has said of the modern day Mods, “they look good and they’ve got the moves!” No doubt then that The New Faces will have you boogie-ing on down till the early hours of the morning. (Words: Stephanie Soh)

Entry: Free, 6pm-2am (7:30pm screening). Visit www.wearetbc.com for more info.

In just two short years, The Book Club in Shoreditch has become one of the best-known alternative nightspots in East London. With a colourful and creative calendar of events incorporating arts and craft, talks, film screenings, DJs and dance classes, its quirky manifesto of ‘drinking and thinking’ has proved a big hit with the East End’s arty hipsters.

We love it too, so we thought it best to let you know that from the October 17th to the 23rd, ‘the Queen of Hoxton’s younger sister’ will be celebrating its birthday in style with a weeklong calendar of activities, including some old favourites.

Draw the seven deadly sins at a lifedrawing session with a twist, battle others at ping pong, learn about the history of perfume at Scratch + Sniff or create a winning volcanic explosion at Monday’s Science Fair. But if that all sounds a bit too much like hard work, just come for a boogie and a slice of birthday cake on the Friday or Saturday to the sounds of resident DJ Filthy Duke plus special guests.

Expect streamers, party poppers, happy young people and frivolous fun times – Happy birthday Book Club!  (Words: Aoife Moriarty)

It might be a tad bit tricky to pronounce, but Bioluminescence, a showcase by Mila Nesterova, will  be bringing a fluorescent spectacle to Shoreditch this month, featuring light-boxes, large-scale fashion photography and still life prints.

Calling herself the ‘explorer of light’, the Moscow-born photographer’s work looks at contemporary life, and includes an exciting interpretation of everyday objects using ultraviolet light – images of which will be shown at the exhibition for the very first time.

Mila first developed her craft  when studying at the  Icart-Photo school of photography in Paris in 2003. Since then, she’s earned a Master in Arts in Fashion Photography at the London College of Fashion, while her work has appeared in  Russian edition’s of Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue.

You’ll also get to see her spectacular exhibition for free, and it’ll be at The Book Club from September 22nd.  Go see. (Words: Monique Todd)
