In 2012, an Ethiopian teenager named Abenezer Temesgen had a brilliant idea. His plan? To get disadvantaged kids off the streets of Addis Abba through skateboarding, even though he didn’t have the funds, equipment or even a skatepark. But since then, he’s shared his mission with the help of Californian photographer Sean Stromoe, and Ethiopia Skate was born – a thriving project that’s getting love from all around the world.

One supporter is Berlin-based photographer Daniel Reiter, who met the community in 2015. He decided to create a photo series of the scene and you can now check out those pics in an exhibition at Rich Mix next month. Some of Reiter’s gorgeous snaps will be sold as limited edition fine art prints and all profits will go towards to the project, which hopes to raise enough cash to install the nation’s first skatepark.

The exhibition runs from April 6 to April 28 in the Lower Café Gallery. Find out more about Ethiopia Skate at www.ethiopiaskate.org.

The starting point is simple. The result anything but. An imaginary line is drawn between Lahore Central Station in Pakistan and Liverpool Street Station in London. Ten arts practitioners from each country have been commissioned to make new work responding to the urban landscape they encounter along the first mile of each end of the line. Slice, an interactive video installation at Rich Mix, shows the culmination of the project so far.

By moving an arrow along a map of each city, you select which artist’s video to watch according to its location on the line. All engage with a particular urban site but, unsurprisingly since the participating artists include performers, animators, a ballet dancer, a storyteller and a grime mc, the works vary massively, giving the exhibition an exciting, sprawling, collage-like feel…

While you may struggle to pronounce “Slideluck Potshow” on first attempt, this shouldn’t be a put-off – after all, if there’s one thing I personally can’t resist it’s a night of art AND epicurean delights!

Confused? Well, Slideluck Potshow London III is the third time the capital will be taking part in this international project where participants are treated to an exhibition of the flavours that make their city unique.

The event promises fresh bursts of original art and photography compiled into an eclectic slideshow by talented curator and editor Yumi Goto. The theme? “Multiculturalism Works!” But before you settle down for the show you can indulge in conversation and mastication (it means to chew, get your mind out of the gutter) at a dinner, which is supplied by… well, everyone.

Attendees bring a plate of whatever their signature dish is and then the communal banquet begins! This non‐profit platform for the sharing of good art and good food is being held at SNAP Studios on June 18th – tickets are only £5 and if interested, click here! (Words: Beth Downey)
