In 2012, an Ethiopian teenager named Abenezer Temesgen had a brilliant idea. His plan? To get disadvantaged kids off the streets of Addis Abba through skateboarding, even though he didn’t have the funds, equipment or even a skatepark. But since then, he’s shared his mission with the help of Californian photographer Sean Stromoe, and Ethiopia Skate was born – a thriving project that’s getting love from all around the world.

One supporter is Berlin-based photographer Daniel Reiter, who met the community in 2015. He decided to create a photo series of the scene and you can now check out those pics in an exhibition at Rich Mix next month. Some of Reiter’s gorgeous snaps will be sold as limited edition fine art prints and all profits will go towards to the project, which hopes to raise enough cash to install the nation’s first skatepark.

The exhibition runs from April 6 to April 28 in the Lower Café Gallery. Find out more about Ethiopia Skate at www.ethiopiaskate.org.

The motto for the weekend: Head East and Chill. On my way to my friend’s group show at Protein studios, I stumbled upon what looked like a rave, but two snaps in and I was out. Nothing to see there, nothing to see. On the other hand, the Present 003 exhibition was all kinds of brilliant, showcasing the work from a diverse collective of artists and designers. Shout-outs to Philippa Long and Lakwena Maciver for their dope contributions!

I don’t what it was about this weekend’s Lumiere festival (it’s just a bunch of pretty light displays), but it brought the entire planet to London. Like, seriously. Roads were even closed off to accommodate the extra crowds of people. But through the madness, I managed to hit up a different area every day – Kings Cross, Piccadilly and Charing Cross – and thankfully, survived.  All shot on a Canon 5D Mark I, 24-105mm lens.

My weekend was so jam-packed with outings and Christmas festivities (not to mention my new Star Wars obsession – more about that another time), I’ve only just had time to blog about it.  But what a weekend it was. I squeezed in a quick sweep around the V&A, lunch at Tombo, panettone from Santa, a ride by the BEST decorated house EVER, a carol service at Wembley and my friend’s annual gingerbread party. And the best bit? Sleeping it all off on Monday.

A friend recently reminded me how much I miss street photography – and by that I mean just wandering around London with my camera and capturing whatever catches my eye.  So I’ve decided I’m gonna try to do a regular round-up of the things I see (unless I’ve got a horrendous cold and the last thing I’d want to do is gallivant around town).  Thank God, I was fairly healthy this weekend, so mission accomplished.

Here’s a selection of images I shot over the weekend, including The Soho Shebeen Irish Pop-Up Bar, Remembrance Day and a dashing trio of calvarymen riding down The Mall. All shot on a Canon 5D Mark 1 (an oldie but still a goodie!) with a 28-105mm lens.

A bartender puts the finishing touches on an espresso martini, made with Feeney's irish cream liqueur. Spotted at The Soho Shebeen Irish pop-up, running for one more week on 11-13 November from 5.30pm-10pm. All visitors get their first drink free.

The great Euriphides once said that experiences and travel were as “education in themselves” – so throw photography in the mix and you’re pretty much getting a degree in life.  That’s the beauty of travel photography: its ability to document the world through stories of people, cultures and landscapes, giving the viewer new knowledge to take away – and this is exactly what you get when observing the work of David Constantine, Nick Danziger and Justin Partyka, three of the UK’s leading contemporary photographers.

Pic: Nick Danziger

Pic: Nick Danziger

A cross-section of their works are presented in a new exhibition With A Conscious Eye: An Exhibition of Three Photographers, where they’re offering powerful insights into the communities they’ve visited on their travels.  The award-winning Danziger, for instance, captures Hindu pilgrims during one of the largest religious gatherings in history, while you’ll find Partyka presenting the remains of an agragrian community in East Anglia.  Constantine’s work goes even further: confined to a wheelchair since the age of 21, his photos of people in developing communities recovering from conflict are taken from a unique perspective – and the final results are nothing short of incredible. This is a rare opportunity to see travel photography at its finest with a clear photojournalism edge, so prepare to be enlightened.

With A Conscious Eye – An Exhibition of Three Photographers: David Constantine, Nick Danziger and Justin Partyka will be on view at Osborne Samuel gallery from 4 – 21 December. For more info, visit: www.osbornesamuel.com

Dayanita Singh is often described as simply a photographer, but her work –  while usually photo-based – goes far beyond that, using original display methods and covering a never ending array of topics.
A major new exhibition of her work is about to begin at the Hayward Gallery. Going beyond the traditional photography exhibit, the themes  have been organised and put onto tall seven-foot structures. They resemble hard back books with flaps that allow you to pull out each ‘page’,  forming a photography wall display.

nalin-and-natasha-web
It’s a method that has been used by Dayanita throughout her career – she would make photo books for friends capturing the things they had done together, the photos were in a zig zag form allowing the book to stand up and form a mini exhibition for the reader. When one of these books was given to a German publisher who loved the photos and the original style and design and asked to publish them, they were an instant success.
The photos are heavily influenced by Dayanita’s life in India but also include images from her extensive travels around the world. The exhibit includes her famous works such as Dream Villa, Blue Book, I am as I am, Bombay Portraits and the Mona portfolio. (Words: Lucy Palmer)
Dayanita Singh: Go Away Closer is on from 8 October – 15 December. For more info, visit: http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whatson/dayanita-singh-78547
