Peckham in 2015 is a far cry from the ends I reluctantly called home during my uni days in the late 90s.  It’s younger, hipper and more culturally diverse than ever, attracting entrepreneurs who are setting up restaurants and hotspots perfectly aimed at the district’s influx of creative and city types.  At least that’s the vibe I get from The Pedler.  This newbie to SE15 is jam-packed on Wednesday night with the kind of folk who like quirky surroundings, outstanding cocktails and  food with plenty of heart and pizazz.  The latter is all about quality, seasonal ingredients, used in the tapas-style plates and mains my companion and I happily worked our way through.  Our starter platers for the evening were the jerusalem artichoke arancini with a deliciously moreish parsley mayo; the smoked paprika squid, served with lemon oil and another helping of artichoke (I love me some artichoke so not complaining); and the jalepeno cornbread  that deserved a round of applause.

The mains passed the taste test too.  A frizzle chicken with polenta and parmesan came with  “attitude sauce”; I failed to catch what it was made of but whatever it was, it was pretty wonderful accompaniment.  My friend went for the Atlantic cod with beetroot ragu and capers, and while it wasn’t as showstopping as the chicken, it was a good pick, with its subtle but delicious flavours.  Our evening  finally came to a lovely conclusion with the valhrona chocolate fondant served with a passion fruit sorbet  and the hearty pink grapefruit bread and butter pudding with vanilla ice cream.  The added citrus in both desserts did raise our eyebrows but it worked surprisingly well.

The Pedler opened last Christmas, but already it seems to have earned its stripes in a neighbourhood that’s becoming a real contender on the food scene. For more details visit www.pedlerpeckhamrye.com – and check more pics from our visit below!

This new pub is christened after the building’s former occupants (a dance school in the late 30s) and offers locals a vintage-style hangout and restaurant with a menu that’s as intriguing as its name. There’s clearly a southern US influence where the food is concerned, with cornbread, oysters, pig skins and whole crab available and this will appeal to curious Londoners or expats after a taste of home. Kudos to the chef for serving up a pretty authentic, Louisiana-style crab boil. Equipped with gloves, crackers and plenty of napkins, it’s a flavoursome slap-up of of roast corn, potatoes and stew with a bread roll on the side. We followed this up with the moreish oreo and peanut butter ice cream sandwich, which is worth the trip to Farr’s alone. The eats are reasonably priced too, but to check out what else the menu has to offer, visit: www.farrsschoolofdancing.com. See our pics from a recent visit below! farrs4 farrs3 farrs1   ocated in the centre of Dalston and only a stones throw from Dalston Junction Station, Farr’s School of Dancing is a public house at the heart of the local community. Taking its name from a dance school that occupied

the building in the late 30s, Farr’s is a lavish public house with a nostalgic vintage feel. Heavily driven by locally brewed and sourced beverages, Farr’s strives to offer a superb selection of craft beer and ale, and with the imminent arrival of our upstairs kitchen and dining area, a carefully thought out dining and snacking menu. With its high ceilings, wooden floors and vintage décor, Farr’s is a fantastic food and drink destination that offers a friendly smile and exceptional service.

Imagine Heston Blumenthal  invaded the snack bar of your local cinema, transforming the experience of movie-watching into something so unforgettable, you can’t help but wonder why no one thought of it sooner.  It was only a year ago that Edible Cinema decided night outs should be a little more creative – and where Secret Cinema, Future Cinema and the various spin-offs have gone the theatrical route, the guys behind ED have targeted your snacks instead.

The aim of the game  is to use your tastebuds to pull you into the narrative of a film – but you don’t have a clue what you’re eating or drinking as you’re given a tray of numbered parcels which you’re required to open during certain scenes of the film.  We recently checked out Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and as a number flashes up at the side of the screen, you can hear the audience scrambling around to eat/drink the mysterious delicacies – some more tasty than others (and some just down right strange).   At times, the parcels didn’t work at all –  one particular link to a pigeon scene in the film was a little too gross for our liking – and there seemed to be alot more sweet treats than savoury,  although the mint/frozen ice reference was one of our favourites.   Still, Edible Cinema is alot of fun, and if you’re after something a bit more adventurous than 3D glasses and mixed-flavour popcorn, this is a great  bet.  (Words: Matilda Egere-Cooper)
