When I think of Mexico, I think of great food and great parties and the Santo Remedio Mexican pop-up in Tooting over the weekend promises to deliver on both.
Taking place in the  indoor market, your ticket includes entertainment including live music, the chance to enjoy that Mexican staple Tequila and your choice of dinner on the Saturday night or a mid morning brunch if you go on the Sunday.

The traditional food on offer includes Grasshoppers Tostada, pan fried in garlic infused olive oil with homemade chipotle sea salt served over fresh Guacamole.  For the less adventurous there’s Pozole, the traditional dish to celebrate Independence Day, a bowl of delicious silky broth served with pulled pork and hominy topped with shredded lettuce, radishes, oregano,  chile piquin pepper and tostadas on the side (what more do you need in a bowl?).  And if you still have room for more there’s a spicy mexican chocolate sorbet on offer for dessert served with an orange sponge cake.
Santo Remedio regularly host pop up nights around London and are known for their authentic and delicious cooking and stylish and fun atmosphere – so with tickets including a complimentary cocktail and gift bag, your weekend should definitely start here. (Words: Lucy Palmer)

There seems to be a jazz/New Orleans/ blues trend emerging recently. Certainly with NOLA opening in Shoreditch and the highly anticipated The Great Gatsby out at the cinemas, we’re surrounded by the influence of an American era and its legacy  for good music, great drinks, having fun and just cutting loose.

So with that in mind, The Book Club, always in the know, brings us The Book Club Blues on Sunday, June 16th. Featuring live music from Dan Nash, a seasoned master of the blues, who has played extensively throughout the USA, there will also be taster lessons in blues dancing to get you into the swing of it all. So embrace the trend, find your dancing shoes, make sure to grab a bourbon while you’re there and enjoy. (Words: Lucy Palmer).

If you’re from a gen’ of hip-hoppers who attempted to bust a move while watching Wild Style or Beat Street (on repeat, of course), here’s the sort of  rare homage to the good ‘ol days that should be in your diary. The Popin’ Pete Pop Shop has dropped into town courtesy of the legendary Electric Boogaloos dancer, who’ll be bringing back the old school at the Box Park through a week-long series of daily workshops, performances, DJing, Q&As, stuff for the kiddies,  live art and parties.

It’ll be the chance to perfect your P&L’s (poppin’ and lockin’) and learn a bit of dance history before putting it all into practice at the Get Down Social Dance Party at Rich Mix with DJ Biznizz on Sunday, March 31st. Can’t wait to sign up!

Gone are the days when the words ‘brass band’ would conjure up images of snowy Christmas shopping trips and the Salvation Army booming Away in a Manger from their Labrosones. Well, almost.  Rich Mix is once again hosting Breakin Brass, a breaking battle that has musical accompaniment from edgy East London horn collective Brassroots  – a contradiction you may be thinking? Not so urban adventurers, we think it sounds pretty hip and arty!

The club night was a major hit last year and so we can only expect this to continue. The battle includes eight invited dancers and 16 qualifiers. The champ from last year, Lee Roc, returns to defend his crown and charm the judges with his legendary explosive moves. Brassroots will be playing big beat tunes in the battle interludes, on their brass instruments of course. The prize is donated by Soul Powered, a UK agency that has B-boying at its core and their will be freebies galore from Eastpak. The standard is international so prepare to be impressed and then some.  (Words: Laura Thornley)

The next Breakin’ Brass takes place on April 6th.  For more info, visit the Rich Mix website.

If you wind up on a dance floor nursing broken toes and yearning for a suave, robust dancer by the name of Ramon, then you’ve probably had a fantastic night out at Salsa! on Charing Cross Road.  The restaurant, bar and nightclub is  a heady Latin-spiced cocktail for the senses – and if you’ve never been, expect to descend the stairs and be hit with a wall of heat radiating from the people crowding the floor in numbers that must surely violate fire codes. The social and festive atmosphere means you’re as likely to return from the bar with a tall, dark stranger who can spin and dip you on the dance floor than you are with a glass of water (or shot of Cachaça,)  – so be prepared.  And Wallflowers, expect to be plucked – Ramon is waiting. (Words: Beth Downey)

Arrive early for dance classes ranging from one-hour sessions to intensive day courses. Visit bar-salsa.com for more info.
