Billy Smokes at The Institute of Light

Apparently, an Indian summer is on the way this month. If that doesn’t turn out to be fake news, pencil in brunch at the latest Billy Smokes residency. The grown-up BBQ experts have been serving up finger lickin’ charred meats at the mega cool The Institute of London since July. While the weather’s good, bag an outdoor seat and try their slow smoked Texas-meets-Brit specialties. billy-smokes.com

Basquiat: Boom For Real

I’ve been counting down the days until this incredible retrospective of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work finally arrived in London. Well, it’s only a few more weeks to go before we can delve into the world of the multi-talented artist from September 21st. For those unfamiliar with the name, Basquiat rolled with Warhol and took the 80s downtown New York art scene by storm until his untimely death in 1988, aged 27. Beloved by everyone from Jay-Z to Leonardo diCaprio, one of his pieces recently sold at auction for a record $110 million. barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2017/event/basquiat-boom-for-real

My weekend was ridiculously jam-packed with art shows (1:54, Moniker, The Other Art Show, Multiplied at Christies AND Art Goes Pop at the Tate – phew!), but I managed to meet up with my fellow cycling buddies on Sunday morning to  “ride for brunch”.  Joining them at the Selgascano Serpentine Pavilion (which now heads off to LA for good), we hit the streets en route to Rum Kitchen on All Saints Road in Notting Hill.  They offer a special Sunday brunch menu (which includes chicken and waffles!)  Many thanks to  cinematographer Dale McCready for capturing a lovely morning – you can check out his video below (Music credit: “Tired Eyes” by Gengahr)

Though October has just begun, we’re already looking forward to the 22nd,  when the Barbican launches a massive new show revealing the playful collision between the pop art tradition and world of design.  Pop Art Design is a comprehensive collection of artworks which make those bold statements the legendary genre was best known for when it emerged 50 years ago – so  there’s the provocative commentary on the cult of celebrity and consumerism, but it all goes beyond graphics and paintings to feature some of the designs, objects,  architecture and interiors inspired by the movement.
