]]> Wonderful World is the title of photographer Gérard Rancinan’s conclusion to his Trilogy of the Moderns series, a culmination of his works resulting in epic form. They appear in the Londonewcastle Project’s small gallery space in East London, where Rancinan’s prospect of Mickey Mouse as Jesus is only one of the many commercially vulgar propositions.

With such a grandiose installation (large-scale framed argentic print photographs are mounted on plexiglas), Rancinan’s exhibition comes across more as a show-and-tell demonstration of our consumerist society – so photography is presented as a highly artificial art form that requires little more than the staging of plastic props and human figurines resembling global gimmicky figures like Batman.

At a cost to Walt Disney’s loveable figurehead, stark imagery incorporates the ever-sellable Mickey, with surreal results. Almost by presenting such photography as a form of art, one might say Wonderful World offers us a message that negotiates the problem of understanding how wonderful a world can be, judging by its commercial and/or artistic virtues – and it will definitely leave you with plenty of food for thought.  (Words: Li Yin Soh)
