The strength of a photo can depend on a range of technical aspects, but the way it resonates emotionally often makes for a winning shot.

Excitingly, new exhibition ‘Wembley to Soweto’ presents evocative images through the eyes of the people who live there.  Disadvantaged South African teenagers were given the opportunity to capture their personal worlds in a workshop taught by photographer John Cole, and the result is a refreshing collection of over 60 pictures of Johannesburg and surrounding areas, and showing photographic innovation in a lively and thought-provoking way.  Snaps include bustling street scenes to the opening of the World Cup in 2010, and all proceeds from the the  successful show (it’s been exhibited in NYC, Antwerp and Johannesburg!), have been invested into the photographers’ schools. So it’s a pleasure to see a project that has helped encourage youths to explore artistic expression rather than fall into a life of possible hardship and struggle. (Words: Monique Todd)

‘Wembley To Soweto’ exhibition will be at The Gallery OXO from Thursday 7 July – Sunday 24 July 2011. For more information visit w2s.wiltonpictures.com
