Trawl your child’s mind for a memory of interactive adventure fiction circa 1980s, and you’ll know exactly where the title of this Soho Theatre play is heading. Nathan Penlington translates his obsession with the classic Choose Your

Own Adventure books into this revived one-man play that allows the audience to choose the ending, just like the cult books. The premise surrounds Penlington’s experience of purchasing 106 of the early versions of the ‘young adult’ fiction on ebay. All second-hand books arrived with Terence Prendergast inscribed on the inside cover and some diary pages tucked away at the back. The adventure and choices are all in the ensuing mysteries of just who Prendergast is and the fate of the host, Nathan Penlington. There are a whopping 1500 different endings (played out through a video feed), each performance will have its unique twists and outcomes, voted for by a democratic audience ballot (very civilised). choose-your-own-documentary-image-1-2-lst119795 The play is a mix of stand up, documentary and storytelling and it has received great press on its tour so far. In Edinburgh Fringe it won the Scotsman First Fringe award 2013 and has had sell out shows at the Southbank and Austin Texas. It’s not only an ode to the classic fiction so dearly remembered by all us literary buffs of the 1980s but also a contemplation of the smaller, but significant decision making moments, drawing our awareness to how your destiny changes from one moment to the next. Inspiring stuff. (Words: Laura Thornley) On until February 16th. For more info visit: Soho Theatre
