Sadler’s Sampled is a dance festival that truly has it all. And when I say, has it all, I don’t just mean in terms of its incredibly diverse montage of genres, which includes hip-hop, contemporary, tango and ballet… I mean it really has it all. Film screenings, workshops, talks, dance lessons, interactive art installations and live music all form part of this two-week-long celebration of dance.

The event is being hosted in the Sadler’s Wells, and offers a new and interactive way of experience dance with frequent opportunities for the audience to get involved in post-performance classes and learn about the vast variety of dance styles put on show.

Rosa's Drumming

The festival’s remarkable line-up includes pieces from some of the best modern choreographers around, notability world-renowned Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s romantic duet ‘Faun’ and contemporary dance pioneer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s ‘Drumming’, danced by the choreographer’s own company, Rosas, and the revolutionary and evocative ‘Political Mother’ by British dance star Hofesh Shechter.

In my mind, the best thing about Sadler’s Sampled it that you don’t have to be a huge dance fan to find something that will interest you. In fact, thanks to the incredible amounts of creativity on display, it would be impossible not to find something to either watch or join in with – or both. (Words: Conori Bell-Bhuiyan)

From June 22nd to July 7th.  For more information visit: www.sadlerssampled.com

If you thought hip-hop dance could only come in the form of a guilty pleasure (see the entire Step Up critically-dubious dance movie franchise) then think again. There’s skill in them there steps, and UK hip-hop dance legend Jonzi D is back with a Sadler’s Wells show to prove it.

Jonzi D

After years touring with his dance company Breakin’ Convention, Jonzi D is striking out on his own, in his first solo show in over a decade. Programme A is a retrospective and will showcase some of his best-known works including Guilty, Aeroplane Man and Silence the Bitchin, the latter two having been shown on Channel 4 in 1997 and 2003 respectively. But there’ll be new material too, with Programme B debuting The Letter, a ‘choreopoetic’ response to Jonzi being offered an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list.

In addition to the main programmes, there’ll also be free post-show talks with Jonzi himself and renowned musician Soweto Kinch, and special guest performances from Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy and Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante from Boy Blue Entertainment, amongst others. When it comes to dance performance you can move to – as well as move you –  it doesn’t get much better than this. (Words: Jane Duru)

Lyrikal Fearta: Redux runs at Sadler’s Wells, Lilian Baylis studio, from Oct 18-20 and 25-27. For more info, visit  www.sadlerswells.com/show/Jonzi-D-Lyrikal-Fearta-Redux

Legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti has a story worth telling. So as with all great stories, it was only a matter of time until people across the globe began to hear it.

Born in Nigeria in the thirties, Kuti created music that attacked the countries’ oppressive military regime and gave voice to Nigeria’s underclass during the seventies and eighties. The creator of Afrobeat, he was also a spectacular showman, as well as being an infamous polygamist who famously married 27 women on the same day in 1978.

A biographical musical about his life opened on Broadway at the end of 2009 to rave reviews – and thanks to the financial backing from superstars Will Smith and Jay-Z, the story of the Nigerian renegade’s extraordinary life as a musical pioneer, political activist and notorious womanizer went on to win three Tony awards and later, a sell out run at the National Theatre in the capital.

The vibrant musical now comes to Sadler’s Wells from 20th July with the original Broadway star Sahr Ngaujah reprising his Tony nominated role of the dynamic and free-spirited Fela.

With incredible choreography and more than ample material to shock, move and inspire in equal measure, it’s not to be missed. Just like the man himself, Fela! promises to be a true force of nature. (Words: Aoife Moriarty)

Fela! is on at Sadler’s Wells until August 28th.  For more info, click here.
