At a time when street photographers are feared and under constant suspicion, could the freedom to capture city life diminish? Well, with the emergence of anti-terror laws the future does look a bit bleak, but the London Street Photography Festival is ready to challenge the obstacles facing the art by putting it on a pedestal all over London this July.

There will be a series of events and exhibitions taking place to celebrate a tradition which stems back centuries – so if you’re up to the challenge,  consider booking a workshop alongside two of the biggest names in contemporary street photography – Jesse Marlow and David Gibson. You’ll have a chance to find out more about their work and skills, followed by assignment to practice everything you’ve learnt!

And for those who want something quick and simple, check out Blurb’s Bookmaking sessions where you can find out how to publish and market your own remarkable photography tome. Or, if you fancy getting a deeper understanding  of the current street photography debate,  head down to ‘Why does street photography make us so paranoid’ later this month to watch a film documenting the difficulty photographers faced during the ‘Stand Your Ground’ demonstration in June.

So with plenty more going on this month, maybe this could be the festival that ensures there’s a solid future is in sight for street photography after all. (Words: Monique Todd)

The London Street Photography Festival runs throughout the month of July with a series of events, exhibitions and workshops. For more info, visit www.londonstreetphotographyfestival.org/diary.
