The four strong band is led by Kuda Matimba, once a member of the Bhundu Boys – a group famed for paving the way for African groups breaking Europe – and a talent on the South African Marimba. Renowned as a charismatic and energetic performer, the trance-enducing beats are a mix of traditional and modern styles, guaranteed to get even the most reserved of wall-flowers throwing some shapes. Intrinsic to their performances is the sense of social awareness, today and tomorrow, respect, and compassion… so prepare for some loving vibes and an heartfelt show.

It won’t be Harare’s first time in London. Previous appearances include similar large-scale festivals from the Lord Mayor’s show. London Sanctuary festival and Rise Festival amongst many others. Playing alongside Harare on the night are the London Zulu, a group once fronted by South African Doreen Thobekile. It is now her daughter who takes the reigns, and performs their songs with the help of Transglobal undergound and some West London Funk.

The London African Music Festival has a host of events both at the Attic and beyond, including performances by Casbah Blues combining a fusion of Arabic, African Blues and reggae. There is also a performance at the Attic from the comedic duo the FOKN Bois from Ghana and a fierce line-up at the Vortex Jazz Bar in Dalston. (words: Laura Thornley)
