A very clever anonymous-type once said “jazz is an open-ended music designed for open minds”, and it’s an ethos that perfectly sums up the musical musings of keyboardist Robert Glasper.  Since 2003, the Texan’s taken cues from Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk to produce jazz music with hip-hop bravado, and he’s been equally inspired by past collaborators including Kanye West and Mos Def.  He’s back in town once again for the London Jazz Festival, but this time he heads to XOYO on November 16th – and having gone in on incredible covers of Nirvana and Radiohead in the past with his supergroup The Experiment, it’s pretty much guaranteed he’ll deliver a truly outstanding show you’d be kicking yourself if you miss.

Click here to buy tickets for Robert Glasper at XOYO, November 16th.

When it comes to live music, we know London rules – and the variety gigs taking place in the capital's big and small venues are always a great look for your social calendar. But have you ever thought about attending a music awards show? I had an absolute blast at my first BRITs awards some years ago. The glittering knees-up was a perfect excuse to pull out my fanciest threads, enjoy

alot a little champers and see some top performances, like the unforgettable outings from Adele, Plan B, Tinie Tempah and Take That earlier this year.

The BRITs return on February 21st, and if you're a MasterCard holder, you can now bag a seat before any else to see some of 2011's freshest acts, chart-toppers (and the lovely James Corden, who'll be hosting for the third time). The priority booking is just one of the many perks of Priceless London – a scheme featuring hundreds of hook-ups to help you enjoy the city, including half-price theatre tickets, dining offers and even VIP treatment in museums and arts venues across the capital. So if you ever wanted to tuck into canapes and champagne with the cast from a star-studded show like the Ladykillers or snag an exclusive signed menu from a Michelin-starred chef, visit www.pricelesslondon.co.uk to learn about these and more exclusive benefits. You've only got until November 24th to get your BRIT Awards 2012 tickets too – so if you're up for attending one of biggest musical events of the year, click here for more info.

After months of partnering with the immensely notable visual label ANTIVJ, Flying Lotus makes his UK debut at London’s creative hub Roundhouse on October 22nd. From being an unfamiliar face within L.A.’s melting pot of music, Lotus (real name Steven Ellison) is now regarded as one of the world’s most innovative creator of fresh remixes, collaborations and one-off musical installations.

Although he’s worked with the diverse likes of Erykah Badu, Thom Yorke and Suicidal Tendencies – it’s quite difficult to know what to expect from his next show. With only three performances  under his belt with ANTIVJ (the other two in Paris and Los Angeles) there’s been plenty  of  hype – but judging from the stunning visuals used in his recent music video for “MmmHmm” from Warp Films,  his boundless  imagination  should guarantee we’re looking at a dazzling performance – an exhibition even – in Roundhouse’s main space. Off the back of their Grammy win for ‘Wake Up!’, a collaboration album with soul singer John Legend, and a nomination for their own LP ‘How I Got Over’, hip-hop legends The Roots return to London on August 19 to play the Hammersmith Apollo, with support from grime maestro Kano.

Consistently disproving the theory that musical, experimental hip-hop can’t work for over two decades, the group are best known for breakthrough album ‘Things Fall Apart’, which is renowned the world over for its use of live instrumentation, lack of sampling and an uncompromising approach to the genre.

Expect some furiously paced performances from founding members Black Thought and percussionist Questlove, energetic off-the-cuff jamming, socially conscious lyrical flows and a guest performance or two (if their last visit to London was anything to go by ) to top it all off.

Here’s an opportunity to see a group currently at the peak of their powers despite a long legacy; so it’s one gig that’s guaranteed not to disappoint. (Words: Aoife Moriarty)
