A few years back the words ‘street food’ would conjure up a grim picture of polystyrene cups and floppy burgers. But nowadays you’d have noticed that this crime to the food biz is far behind us. Street food can and should be amazing and, thankfully, the great start-up businesses that are behind this food trend are making sure it stays that way.

To celebrate this growing trend. the people who run the Real Food Festival are hosting an event dedicated to the exceptional street food available in the capital. It will run over Bank holiday weekend and be a feast of flavours from around the world.

On offer are a few names you will probably recognise from around town –  the party paella stall Jamon Jamon will be there, as well as the deliciously sweet Churros Garcia and Horn Ok Please, serving some of the amazing street food to come out of India. There will also be music entertainment – purely un-commerical of course! – making  for a great, party atmosphere.

Newcomers to the street food scene include the pretty amazing Ice Kitchen who specialise in ice lollies with a difference. Drawing on the Latin American Paleta tradition, these frozen treats use whole piece of fruit, making them visually stunning… and they taste pretty good too. There will be alcoholic refreshments in the shape of Craft Beer Rising and Fever Tree, a stall dedicated to the mighty Gin and Tonic (hello!). Is there a better way to spend your bank holiday? We didn’t think so either. (Words: Laura Thornley)
