Vacay season is well and truly here, so to kick off my summer of 2017 I’m off to Rotterdam next month: South Holland’s gorgeous metropolis for food, culture, architecture and MUSIC (I’ve got tickets for the North Sea Jazz festival y’all!!!!).

But while I’m looking forward to swaying along to the likes of Jamiroquai, Erykah Badu, Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper Experiment, I’ve set aside plenty of time over the weekend for a bit of exploring. Here are at least three things on my itinerary:

Jog through the city on a ‘running tour’

I love cycling (as do the Dutch, obvs), and my original plan was the go on a cycle tour. But all the good ones are booked up or don’t work with my timings, so what’s the next best thing? Running. Rotterdam Sight Running Tours offer a 7km run around all the modern and historical bits of the city.  Fingers crossed we’ll get to jog past those infamous cube homes (for the ‘gram!)

Pig out at Tante Nel

I’m committed to shamelessly devouring everything on this trip, so one of my foodie stops will be Tante Nel. This popular fast food joint is known for their incredible chips served with lavish, mouth-watering toppings. I hear the milkshakes are divine too (see why I’m on that running tour?)

Wander around the Kunsthal Museum

You gotta love a modern museum and since 1992, the Kunsthal has developed a rep for presenting fun and innovative exhibitions around art, design, photography and fashion. Current shows include a tribute to Prince and a large-scale retrospective of the work of influential 20th-century photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Have you been to Rotterdam? Got any tips? Let me know in the comments!

The first UK exhibition by Croatian artist Sanja Iveković presents work across a range of media to address the themes of gender, consumerism and politics. Whilst well-known in art circles – having shown at exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta – Iveković is yet to make her presence really felt here in Blighty with a solo show, so, it’s perhaps timely that following on from a major retrospective at MoMA New York, a survey of her work is now taking place on these shores.

The work of Iveković  – who came of age in Yugoslavia and lives and works in Croatia –  has been produced against a backdrop of political unrest. In Triangle (1979), she employs both performance and photography to document her political activism as she performs a deliberate provocative act. Elsewhere, reappropriated glossy magazine ads confront current injustices against women  or pay homage to forgotten political heroines. Media representations of femininity are also explored, exposing the clichéd notions of beauty in both video Make Up, Make Down (1978) and collage Double Life (1975-76).

Unlike many of her contemporaries, Iveković never left for the West during Yugoslavia’s political upheavals yet her work is relevant to a wider international audience – so here’s an opportunity to get to know her better. (Words: Eri Otite)

Sanja Iveković: Unknown Heroine is showing at the South London Gallery and Calvert 22 until February 24,  2013. For more info, visit www.southlondongallery.org or www.calvert22.org

When Susanne Bier won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film earlier this year, she joined an elite club of only a handful of women ever to have been nominated for a direction related Academy Award for a second time. To take home the statuette must have made that important occasion that much sweeter. And fully deserved it was too, for her new film, ‘In A Better World’, is a beautiful and expertly crafted film, which effectively demonstrates her breadth of experience and skill as one of Europe’s most foremost filmmakers.

The melodrama tells the story of two inexplicably intertwined families. Commuting from his home in Denmark, Anton is a doctor at an African refugee camp, who is separated from his wife Marianne with whom he has two young sons. The eldest, Elias, is being bullied at school. That is until Christian, a troubled young boy who has just moved from London with his father after the death of his mother, quickly forms a bond with the vulnerable and more passive Elias. Christian is entirely preoccupied with exacting revenge on those around him, inevitably leading to some unexpected and dangerous consequences for both families.

Juxtaposing an apparently civilized Danish society with the chaos of a lawless and corrupt African society, Bier’s film deals with some complex moral ideas about retribution, forgiveness, how adults and children view the world differently and trying to control worlds and individuals that simply cannot be controlled. Although at times in danger of becoming a sermon, it is a refreshing taste of what cinema can be when it genuinely sets out to explore interesting concepts and ask pertinent questions. Worth every penny of the admission price.

In A Better World is out now.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the rest of Europe tends to pull off the most eclectic and all-round amazing festivals in the summer? I passed through Switzerland’s Montreux in ’09 (Best. Fest. Ever) and rather excitingly, TCé will be heading to Finland next month to get a load of Flow – a creative music and arts festival based in Helsinki.  With a passion for experimentalism and quality music, they’ve got an impressive lineup in 2011, with Kanye West as the main headliner, and other awesome acts on board include Janelle Monae (OMG!), Lykki Li, Mogwai, Empire of the Sun, A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip and our Capital’s very own electro-popster James Blake.

Flow also has a strong tradition of championing underground heroes from their native country and beyond,  so if Ignatz, Kawaguchi Masami’s New Rock Syndicate, Kemialliset YstŠvŠt or Mikko Innanen & Innkvisitio, mean anything to you musos out there, we’ll be scoping them out, along with a unique art installation from Berlin-based Croatian artist Ivana Franke (check out her stuff here) at the new Cirko venue of the festival site.

Rest assured we’ll  keep you posted on all this and more on August 12 to 14, but for more information visit www.flowfestival.com. If you fancy coming along, 3-day  tickets are 115 € (£101) and flights can be taken with Blue 1, starting from £237 for a 4-day return trip from Heathrow to Helsinki.  For accommodation info ,visit the Scandic Hotels site.  (Words: Matilda Egere-Cooper)
