Off the back of their Grammy win for ‘Wake Up!’, a collaboration album with soul singer John Legend, and a nomination for their own LP ‘How I Got Over’, hip-hop legends The Roots return to London on August 19 to play the Hammersmith Apollo, with support from grime maestro Kano.

Consistently disproving the theory that musical, experimental hip-hop can’t work for over two decades, the group are best known for breakthrough album ‘Things Fall Apart’, which is renowned the world over for its use of live instrumentation, lack of sampling and an uncompromising approach to the genre.

Expect some furiously paced performances from founding members Black Thought and percussionist Questlove, energetic off-the-cuff jamming, socially conscious lyrical flows and a guest performance or two (if their last visit to London was anything to go by ) to top it all off.

Here’s an opportunity to see a group currently at the peak of their powers despite a long legacy; so it’s one gig that’s guaranteed not to disappoint. (Words: Aoife Moriarty)
