We all have those Christmas traditions we look forward to every year and one of mine is going with my friends to the Southbank too see the Christmas lights and ice rink and drink mulled wine as we wander by the river to keep out the cold. This year with so much on offer,  they’ve set up www.southbanklondon.com/winter to make planning your Southbank visit hassle free and super easy to organise. Upcoming events include the 12 cocktails of Christmas at Oxo tower, Light Princess a new musical by Tori Amos, the Eyeskate ice rink and even Father Christmas at the London Aquarium where he’ll be hanging out with the penguins.

The site includes more than just event listings and will also host an online photo contest launching in January and a special Southbank advent calendar, as well as offers and deals for the areas many restaurants and shops, saving you more money for all the Christmas presents you need to buy.
With so many events on offer at the Southbank it’s the perfect time to visit and get in that Christmassy mood. And with events running into January it’s more than just a Christmas celebration but the perfect chance to beat the winter blues. (Words: Lucy Palmer)

If you’re looking to get your mitts on some exclusive art this Christmas, a new pop-up art store featuring rare works from established and emerging artists will be coming to Covent Garden this winter.  Beautiful Crime Crime Concept (BCC) will offer a range of prints and gifts showcasing pieces from 25 artists, including Tracey Emin, Banksy and Jonathan Yeo. The temporary venue will also  host a series of interactive events such as “Mug Shot My Face” on November 30th:  artist Russell Marshall with turn you into a “beautiful criminal” in the style of his acclaimed screen prints of celebrity mug shots (see below).  Until then, you can visit the store from November 15th until December 29th – and  for more info about forthcoming events, visit:  www.beautifulcrime.com

If you like the West End but can’t keep up with theatre prices you might want to try the Battersea Arts Centre Scratch Nights. At only £1 a show (or pay as you go), BAC Scratch showcases their artists in residence and allows them  to test their ideas on a live audience to get feedback in the process – and such is the quality of the shows, even  Jerry Springer the Opera was created through the Scratch process.

Located not far from the trendy Northcote Road in Clapham Junction, the BAC is definitely a cool place to be. I went to see the multi-talented spoken-word poet, rapper-cum-playwright Kate Tempest a few months ago, and against  futuristic background music, the tattooed wordsmith was funny, witty, and entertaining, linking the theme of mythology to young peoples’ struggle in society.

What’s also great about the BAC is the atmosphere  (you can bring your drinks from the bar into the show) and meet the actors themselves, so for raw theatre that’s good on the pocket, the  BAC Freshly Scratched Christmas show takes place on December 22-23 2011.  (Words: Zaneta Denny)
