The folks behind Chicken Shop and Dirty Burger bulk up their trendy food empire with a themed restaurant that replaces the former Thai Break in Notting Hill.  It’s been such a hit since launching in the summer that they’ve recently announced plans to open 7 days a week from 8-10pm.

The USP:   Eggs, obviously.  But not your typical scrambled, fried or poached to break the morning fast, but as the tasty star to mouth-watering trimmings like mushroom ragu and crisp polenta or  hearty fried chicken / shrimp / braised beef / pork belly buns that you can imagine is a whole lot sexier than a fried egg sandwich.  Although they do one of those too – with sweet corn salsa – and it is quite sexy.

Having a break… At Egg Break

The food: Generous and no doubt, Instagrammable. The shrimp with green chilli, tomato and pineapple salsa was a joy to wolf down, with french fries and smoked bacon, one of their many breakfast-y sides. I also polished off the very naughty but nice baked salted caramel custard with creme fraiche for afters.

Budget: The prices here are my kind of cheerful for West London. A full English is a tenner and the buns range from £6-10, while sides are £2-4 and sweets roughly £4-6.  So three courses for 20-ish quid? Bargain. The £7 cocktails will bump that up, but I’d happily splash out on a few Aperol Spritz’s or their Pisco sours come pay day.

Good for: Brunch, lunch or dinner after a Portobello stroll.

I was kindly invited to a blogger’s breakfast yesterday morning to experience the new breakfast menu at Les Deux Salons, the chic Parisian brasserie in Covent Garden which recently reopened following an extensive refurbishment this summer.  They’ve done a gorgeous job with the interiors and it’s the perfect setting for their early morning  delights including  viennoiseries (croissants and pastries), pain per du (french toast) and oeufs however you like them.  The breakfast is now available Monday to Friday from 7.30am to midday (or from 9am) at the weekend but you can find out more about it on the Les Deux Salons website.

Ah, sweet potatoes! I love the fact that they’re so versatile – especially when you change your mind about how you want to use them, like I did on Tuesday. That’s how I arrived at the idea of making sweet potato pancakes for breakfast.  I had a leftover cooked sweet potato and after toying with the idea of making sweet potato muffins, I figured it could work just as well (and quicker) in pancakes.  Well, let me tell you something – those pancakes were the best mid-week breakfast I’ve had for a while.  Just look at ’em!  Topped off with peaches, blueberries, strawberries,  greek yoghurt, honey and cinnamon, these were  made with buckwheat flour and no sugar, but I’ve outlined the original recipe I found via  Allrecipes which is fairly easy to tweak.   Serve this for weekend brunch with a light papaya smoothie and a mug of Earl Grey….

Louisiana sweet potato pancakes

Makes roughly 8-12 smallish pancakes or I imagine 6 large ones?  Whatever you choose, you get a good yield!

Prep + cooking time = 40 minutes

  • 3/4 pound or 12 oz sweet potatoes (I used one sweet smallish potato that I zapped in the microwave for about 10 minutes – but according to the recipe I should have technically used about 2 small potatoes or 1 large one, which would taste better)
  • 1 1/2 cups or 340g  plain flour
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt  (I’d recommend cutting this down to 1/2 a teaspoon)
  • 2 eggs, beaten

Directions

  1. Place sweet potatoes in a medium saucepan of boiling water (or zap it in the microwave)  and cook until tender but firm, about 15 minutes. Drain, and immediately immerse in cold water to loosen skins. Drain, remove skins, chop and mash
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg or mixed spice. Mix mashed sweet potatoes, eggs, milk and butter in a separate medium bowl. Blend sweet potato mixture into the flour mixture to form a batter.
  3. Preheat a lightly greased griddle  or fry pan over medium heat. Drop batter mixture onto the prepared griddle by heaping large spoonfuls and cook until golden brown, turning once with a spatula when the surface begins to bubble.
  4. Keep cooked pancakes warm by putting them on a baking tray (with baking paper) in the oven on 100-150 C.  When all the pancakes are cooked, serve with toppings of your choice.
papayasmoothie

Papaya smoothie: You know, I never bought a papaya in my life (!) until I came across this recipe from the Hemsley cookbook. I tweaked it a tad using a whole papaya, 1 banana, lime juice (I used lemon) a little bit of ginger , roughly 200 ml water and honey to taste). Blend it and bam! Trés dope.

I’m usually guilty of going for a traditional short stack with all the trimmings whenever I hit up The Diner (they do culinary Americana so well), but did you know they offer a famous Hawaiian brekkie/lunch called the Loco Moco?  Me neither, until a pal and I were invited to try this unusual dish that’s big in the Aloha state, and just one of the many all-day breakfast offerings you can get at The D.

Loco Moco

It’s quite a  full-on meal for 9am, as you get dirty rice topped with a generous burger patty (cooked to your liking), cheese, jalapeño peppers before it’s all doused in gravy, but it’s pretty darn good – and curbed the hunger pangs for a good part of the day. You’ll find Loco Moco under “The Blue Plates” on The Diner menu, but for more info about its history, visit www.whatscookingamerica.net/History/LocoMocoHistory

It’s very rare we extoll the virtues of breakfast on TCé – and considering all the adventuring we get up to, we should! – so we happily accepted an invite to try an early morning meal at Electric Diner, a new restaurant on Portobello Road. The collaboration between Soho House and renowned Chicago restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff has resulted in a venue that feels distinctively Americana with its red booths and cliché interiors, but features a menu injected with a French influence we picked up when we tucked into the open-faced ham, cheese fondue and fried egg (£9) (a pleasure so guilty we tried to pretend it was lunch).

Here, you’ll find a breakfast menu that is modest and relatively inexpensive considering the generous portion sizes, so other honourable mentions include the avocado on toast with a poached egg, sides such as the buttery mushrooms (£3) and hash browns (much crunchier than expected, but went down well with the fondue) and the Berry Boost smoothie, which was light and refreshing (£4).

But we were much too full to go in on the Electric Donuts, with flavours as varied as maple bourbon and bergamot orange, but it’s given us a reason to return – especially on the weekend when we wouldn’t mind a place to escape from Portobello’s infamous hustle and bustle.

Electric Diner
191 Portobello Road,
London, W11 2ED (££)

If  you’re a fan of breakfast – but not such a fan of its usual time – The Breakfast Club in Camden Passage is well worth a visit. Why? Well, for starters, they’ve  managed to solve my persona dilemma of getting my hollandaise fix without sacrificing that much-needed extra half an hour’s sleep. Tucked away behind the busy Upper Street, The branch in Angel has a sunny interior and quirky decor –  also making them the perfect haven for a Saturday morning brunch, or even a dinner date. As well as pancakes, eggs Benedict, and ‘the late late breakfast’ (a full English served after 5pm: ‘because it’s always breakfast time somewhere in the world’), the menu has wide variety of non-breakfast options. On offer is everything from burritos and burgers, to fishcakes and jacket potatoes, all in hearty portion sizes. I had the eggs Florentine with smoked salmon, which came with a very healthy dollop of hollandaise (yes!), while my sister/ foodie-in-crime had the vegetarian burrito. We were both very happy with our orders which were each under a tenner. It’s by no means gourmet stuff, but what The Breakfast Club offers is tasty, filling and varied fare in a chilled environment. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere felt more akin to eating in a friend’s kitchen, albeit your kookiest, iD-reading, vintage headwear-touting friend. At prices similar to Pizza Express, this is a great alternative if you’re looking for a reasonable meal that’s a bit off the beaten track. (Words: Rachel Schraer)

Price: £££££
